  • My Journey

You guys are amazing! I recently found your show, and it inspired me to run Crostini in the Chromebook developer tools virtual machine on my Lenovo laptop. Xfce is my current GUI, but I’ve been jumping around. It was a really easy setup, especially for a noob like me. I really appreciate your recommendations, and I’ve learned a lot already, though I hope to learn more!

  • Awesome show

I switched to Apple Podcasts so I could leave a review and support you guys with ads but I’m not getting any for some reason..? This show has really helped me on my Linux journey plus is so entertaining. Wife’s old laptop is running Debian lika a champ, and it’s also helped me do more with my home servers (a Zimaboard 2 and a pizero 2w)

I don’t mind the ads, they’re fine. The Baked Ziti thing is annoying enough to unsubscribe.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 35: Paid FOSS? Flatpak VS DNF? Game Mod On Linux? All Q&A
Q: Do you think paid software on Linux is fundamentally different from paying for software on Windows?
They discuss that the decision to pay for software on Linux often hinges on perceived value and ongoing support, with examples like Reaper and DaVinci Resolve. The hosts note that supporting open-source tools they rely on (e.g., OBS, Signal, OpenDeck) is a frequent motivation, and they acknowledge that some developers depend on donations or small licenses rather than large commercial deals. Overall, the mindset is similar to Windows—paying for software when it provides value or essential features, but with a stronger emphasis on community-supported and open-source projects in the Linux ecosystem.
Episode 35: Paid FOSS? Flatpak VS DNF? Game Mod On Linux? All Q&A
Q: What are your thoughts on backing up a Bezite Linux system and how would you restore it if something goes wrong?
Backups on Linux are nuanced: you need to capture the list of installed applications (the package state) and the user data in your home folder. A full drive image approach can work but is often overkill; restoring requires both the package manifest and the home data. Tools like Clonezilla offer bit-by-bit backups, while more targeted approaches might involve tar/zip of the home directory plus a script or manifest of installed packages. The conversation emphasizes the difficulty of restoration and advocates for practical, repeatable restore paths rather than solely relying on raw backups.
Episode 35: Paid FOSS? Flatpak VS DNF? Game Mod On Linux? All Q&A
Q: How is game modding seen on Linux, and what are the practical hurdles when modding Unity games or using tools like OverWolf or ThunderStorm under Proton?
Modding on Linux is possible and often workable when using Steam Workshop-enabled games, but injection-based mods and third-party tools can be tricky due to Linux file layout and how Steam stores each title. For many games, Steam Workshop-based mods work smoothly, while external mod managers may require extra setup or run into compatibility issues with tray apps and Windows-only tooling. The key is understanding where the game stores its files and how Linux handles Windows-originated modding tools, with some games benefiting from native or proton-based alternatives.
Episode 29: Linux Wants, App Regression, Hibernation Tests & More
Q: What do you want from Linux and how has your objective evolved since starting the journey?
Adam and Will describe wanting a system that is easier to use for daily web browsing and productivity, while still offering powerful customization for their media production needs; they acknowledge their expectations have shifted toward learning and practical workflow improvements rather than chasing a perfect Linux experience.
Episode 25: Delete Windows Or Linux? Is Repackaging Safe? Tried BlueBubbles? Q&A
Q: Is Will interested in multi streaming Blue Sky Fediverse?
Yes, he's interested and considers ways to stream to multiple platforms including Twitch.
