  • My Journey

You guys are amazing! I recently found your show, and it inspired me to run Crostini in the Chromebook developer tools virtual machine on my Lenovo laptop. Xfce is my current GUI, but I’ve been jumping around. It was a really easy setup, especially for a noob like me. I really appreciate your recommendations, and I’ve learned a lot already, though I hope to learn more!

Update: I just moved to actually dual-booting on a 2019 MacBook Air with Ubuntu-Budgie 26.04 and Mac OS Mojave. I’m on my schoo... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 42: The Final Boss Helps Us Bust Common Linux Myths
Q: Do rolling distros remain as stable as fixed releases?
Stability in rolling distros has improved due to automation and better testing, though there can still be edge cases. For many users, recent Fedora releases show that rolling-like models can be quite reliable, while servers may require more conservative update practices.
Episode 42: The Final Boss Helps Us Bust Common Linux Myths
Q: Is there a single best starter distro for newcomers?
There isn't a single best distro; the best choice balances ease of installation, hardware compatibility, desktop experience, and community support. Some options may be friendlier for beginners due to preinstalled drivers and a smoother installer, but individual needs vary.
Episode 42: The Final Boss Helps Us Bust Common Linux Myths
Q: What is the most realistic learning curve for grandma when switching to Linux?
The answer is nuanced: it depends on the device and toolchain; while some aspects are easier, full usability for a non-technical user depends on hardware support, printer/scanner compatibility, and the availability of user-friendly installers and desktop environments. Overall, a measured learning curve exists rather than an instant switch.
Episode 39: AI Porting Software? Proton Habits? Linux App Summit? All Q&A
Q: Which Proton version and setup do you prefer for gaming on Steam Deck and Cache, and how do you handle Steam OS forks?
They tend to use defaults first, then switch to experimental or specific forks when needed; Proton Cache OS is common on Cache, with Valve's Steam client recommended as a baseline, and ProtonDB as a troubleshooting resource.
Episode 39: AI Porting Software? Proton Habits? Linux App Summit? All Q&A
Q: What are your thoughts on AI-assisted porting of software like Lightroom Lightroom CC to Linux via Wine and AI translation layers?
They are cautiously optimistic about the potential long-term solution but wary of the quality and licensing implications, stressing the importance of community-maintained collaboration and proper licensing enforcement.
