I just want to thank Alice Su for her coverage of China and her hosting for Drum Tower. I must admit I will miss her insights. I must say the this latest episode on what it means to be Taiwanese was enthralling to me as I lived in Taiwan for 2 years setting up a joint-venture and they were some of the best two years of my life. I dreamed at that time ( middle 1990’s) that the mainland would one day be as free as Taiwan, which for me was and is today what China should be. Unfortunately I do not ... more
Alice Su thanks so much for teaching me about China, East Asia & the US. Once in a while I listen to the current podcast but mostly i started from the beginning last fall & have made it to Nov 2023:-) I listen whilst puttering around our apt in Cambridge Mass after work and on weekends. I appreciate your & David Rennie’s journalism & deep respect for China while offering critiques of the impact of current & past policy. Good luck! You will be missed.
I subscribed to The Economist mainly for Drum Tower. It’s been an excellent show in terms of its topics. Since David’s departure, its increasingly hostile tone toward China feels biased and disappointing.

I’d appreciate reporting that’s more balanced and as accurate ... more
Always informative and helpful to both experienced China geeks and those new to that obsession
Having a Chinese host def makes the report a little more balanced, however, the narrative changes along its editorial guidelines each year which challenges its impartiality. Yet, For the majority English media landscape, it offers an extra extension that the main stream couldn’t cover. Personally I liked it more when it was free. It was more objective and nuanced.
