By the early 1970s, heroin was flooding the streets of New York City. Black and Puerto Rican neighbourhoods like Harlem and the South Bronx were hardest hit. This four part podcast series explores how Dr. Mutulu Shakur, stepfather of the late Tupac Shakur, along with members of the Black Panther Party and the Young Lords, combined community health with radical politics to create the first acupunct... more

A fascinating story that reverberates with everything going on in the US today. Great follow-up to the documentary!
This is a great companion to the doc Dope is Death and really addresses the context of The War of Drugs and the importance of health care as a right for all peoples. So much interesting information about Mutuly Shakur, Black Power and The Young Lords and their quest to heal their communities and at large.
I'm just sad there were only 4 episodes. Can't wait for more from this excellent storyteller.
Highly recommended, very informative about a healing practice that would be so beneficial for many people today.
No, you’re not. There are so many twists and turns and characters and forces at work and conspirators and locations that you won’t be able to keep from falling out of the vehicle that is this podcast. Just try to hold on as we zip from some random guy in Montreal treating lumberjacks with acupuncture to the heroin infested streets of Harlem to rural China with barefoot Black Panther doctors to a cell of a federal prison with Tupac’s stepdad! Did I give it all away? Not even close!
This is a great follow up to the documentary. Another chapter in the history of communities of color that has previously been overlooked and accredited to others. Fascinating and motivating. Truly a story of people who saw the need to rise up, take action, and not depend on the government or institutions to take care of their community.
