  • I still love this show!

I don’t drive as often as I would like. And that’s really the only time I listen to podcasts. But the times when I do drive, I try to listen to Jay because I love his show, his interesting guests, his enthusiasm and his honesty. Every time I come back to it, I’m sucked in by the great conversations. Keep up the great work, Jay!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Michael Elias wrote "The Jerk", Jay IS The Jerk
Q: Could you reflect on the balance between art and the realities of show business as you describe your career?
Art was always the driving force for me, even as the industry demanded more pragmatic choices like networking and entrepreneurship. The best work came from collaborations that respected the craft, while also navigating the commercial realities—finding a way to tell honest stories within the system without sacrificing artistic integrity.
Michael Elias wrote "The Jerk", Jay IS The Jerk
Q: What was it like working with Steve Martin, and how did his approach influence the writing?
Steve Martin's comic sensibility—clean, meticulously crafted, and self-aware—was the template for the humor we aimed to preserve. He brought a unique clarity and poise that made the material feel effortlessly funny, and our job was to translate that energy into scenes and dialogue that both fit his persona and carried the story forward.
Michael Elias wrote "The Jerk", Jay IS The Jerk
Q: How did The Jerk come about and what was your vision for the movie?
The Jerk originated when Steve Martin and Carl Gottlieb had Easy Money rejected by Paramount. They took it to Universal, which wanted a rewrite, and I joined to help preserve Steve's persona and humor while shaping the film toward a stronger narrative arc. The collaboration with Carl Gottlieb and Steve Martin helped keep the essence of Steve's act while making it suitable for a broad audience, which ultimately defined the film's vibe.
Actor/writer Paul Greenberg Gets Along With Everyone But Jay
Q: How has his experience shaped his ability to write in other people's voices and work with diverse, high-profile collaborators?
He explains that his ability to imitate and inhabit different voices comes from early theatre training and a willingness to embrace various personas, which has helped him work with stars like Neil Patrick Harris and others by understanding what each performer needs to shine; he also stresses the value of being easy to work with and maintaining a thick skin in a tough industry.
Actor/writer Paul Greenberg Gets Along With Everyone But Jay
Q: Why do Canadians come to this city and thrive in show business and comedy, and what does that say about the Canadian-to-American talent pipeline?
Greenberg discusses the cultural and systemic reasons, including how many Canadian talents move south for bigger opportunities, while also noting the resilience and improvisational mindset developed in Canada that helps them succeed in the U.S.; he uses the 'youngest sibling' analogy to explain both the invisibility and drive of Canadian performers. He also emphasizes the importance of seizing opportunities and building a portfolio rather than waiting for a single breakthrough.
