DIY vs. Guided Elk Hunt: Which One is Right For You ... w/ Cliff Gray I Ep 61
Q: Did you feel like the hunt you did with a guide helped you achieve your learning goals beyond just harvesting an animal?
Yes. The guided experience provided a continuous feedback loop, with the guide explaining decisions in real time, which helped Eric understand why certain moves were made and how to anticipate elk behavior more effectively.
Mastering the Set-Up in Archery Elk Hunting w/ Brian Barney #69
Q: What's your mindset after you shoot an elk and have to decide whether to pursue or back out for a better angle or later shot?
If the shot is money, I give the elk time to bed down and I follow the blood trail to complete the kill. If conditions change or the shot isn't perfect, I back out, regroup, and plan a better approach the next time, prioritizing the animal's safety and a clean finish.
Mastering the Set-Up in Archery Elk Hunting w/ Brian Barney #69
Q: How do you approach wind and thermals when you're in thick timber or canyons during an evening stalk?
I study the thermals and directional winds, positioning myself down canyon or behind the herd so the wind carries toward the elk. In the evening, downhill thermals rise and I use them to stay unseen as I close the distance.
Mastering the Set-Up in Archery Elk Hunting w/ Brian Barney #69
Q: Why did you choose to focus on spot-and-stalk hunting rather than calling your way in on big herd bulls?
I found that the bigger mature bulls are often wise to calls, especially in high-pressure units. By shadowing the herd, using terrain, and waiting for the bull to be in a susceptible spot, you increase your chance to place a perfect shot while keeping the herd calm and moving naturally.
