Because the story of "Derailed" happened over the course of decades, there's a lot there, and a lot we didn't get to. Some of it, like Gov. Jim Doyle's role in ending the train, is still discussed today. Other stuff, like the 2016 Olympics connection... more
When former Gov. Tommy Thompson decided to return to politics in 2012, he was walking into a Wisconsin that was as divided as ever. The game had changed, and Thompson had to play by a new set of rules. That meant a new take on some of his old positio... more
Before Gov. Scott Walker canceled the high-speed rail line that would have connected Madison to Milwaukee in 2010, Wisconsin bought two trains from a Spanish company named Talgo. The story of these trains is messy. And in a way, they're the physical ... more
When Wisconsin rejected $810 million in federal stimulus money for high-speed rail, the money was redistributed to other states. California got the largest chunk to go toward a rail line connecting San Francisco and Los Angeles, a project that is sti... more
Amazingly well written but very sad story. The ignorance and complete lack of understanding of how federal government funding works left Wisconsin without an efficient, modern crown jewel of mass transit.
Fascinating, if exasperating, story!
I enjoyed this podcast. But it’s pretty biased against the republicans in office during this high speed train issue. And that’s why none of them wanted to be interviewed for it I suppose.
I loved how this podcast addresses the larger context and all the complicated ways the economy, politics, public policy, etc played into this specific example of the high speed rail project. Very well done!
Apolitical and informal retold cold case on a project that would have changed Wisconsin in so many ways. A deeply saddening tale exposing how austerity and small town-mindedness left Wisconsin opposed to change. Thank you
A great example how a self centered narrow minded politician can be destructive to a project that had be partisan support before.
As a native Wisconsinite and railroad worker, I found this series to be very well informed. I’m only thru the first four episodes. Can’t wait to hear the rest.
Great content, clear audio, easy listening. I love WPR and can’t wait for the next great series!
Great storytelling and production
Very well done. Derailed simultaneously entertained, informed and left me feeling a mix of emotions ranging from maddened that the train was quashed by Scott Walker to optimistic Amtrak may continue to expand. We are hoping to get a train from Duluth to MSP.
Great production and good story telling about Wisconsin‘s flirtation with high-speed rail. Well done, WPR!
Thoroughly enjoyed this podcast! Very well done!
Not even a Wisconsinite but enjoyed the episodes all the way from Washington, DC
Very disappointing to here this could have been a possibility in Wisconsin and the rails could have been running right now. The opportunities this would open up for people and businesses to get workers if this existed now. Or wanting to visit family in another city within the hour. Very disappointing.
They did a nice job telling a story through the eyes of many players. Interesting to look back on an issue that’s still talked about today outside this podcast.
