Sometimes when people get to know something and love it, it’s hard for them when it changes. I really enjoyed the Garden Log, and was surprised by the new form of Dear Gardener. It took a bit of getting used to the rhythm of this radio collage, the weaving of three gardeners voices into one. It makes for a longer technical learning curve and transitions from one voice to another are challenging. All of that will get honed in time, if he keeps developing this style of podcast, and I hope he does.... more
Really enjoy hearing Ben talk and go over his thoughts and experiences in the garden, I would even enjoy his interview episodes if he didn’t insist on cutting back and forth with multiple guests and making disjointed on purpose. It has potential for a winning format, just not quite there yet.
I’m so glad you’re doing solo podcasts again. I’ve really enjoyed listening to them. I loved The Garden Log, but I couldn’t listen to Dear Gardener, it wasn’t something which made for a relaxed listening experience. The only thing I don’t like about these new solo episodes is the music.
This gardening podcast is like talking with a wittty friend who know much more than I. I love all of its variations.
This is a great podcast for anyone interested in gardening, nature or just the world around them. Always a delight when a new episode drops. Ben is such an engaging host whether he’s in conversation with other experts and enthusiasts, or piloting a solo episode. Listeners will always find something to educate and entertain. Highly recommended.
Treat yourself to Ben Dark’s newest podcast. This new format has him mixing interviews with gardeners around the world with his own gardening and garden explorations.
Ben’s musings seem at the same time diligently and deliberately researched and delivered while also effortless and anecdotal. He blends horticulture, botany, history and the human experience. If you’ve read his newest book “The Grove” you know the quality and enjoyability of his work.
What a revelation. Such a lovely podcast in conversation with passionate and interesting gardeners and an affable, intelligent host.
I really wanted to like this - I loved everything about the Garden Log - but I just can’t get away with it. Tried to listen to the first one twice but just couldn’t get very far at all. Strange noises and weird format.
The Copenhagen episodes were a bit better but still not a patch on the Garden Log. I know Ben isn’t doing the same job anymore but he’s still a gardener so presumably still gardening regularly, so is the old format not still a possibility?! 🙏
(My mum loved your book though!)
I really wanted to listen to these interesting people, but had to give up because of the strange format of dotting around between their unconnected stories. If they are not having an actual conversation then please keep the interviews separate. I loved the Garden Log because of its content and calm, but this new podcast just creates too much stress for me. Such a shame!
What a great couple of episodes. The Dear Gardener is a real gardener’s podcast, the details, minutiae and narratives evoking a sense of déjà vu in the passionate gardener. What is the reason for this? The voice of far from high-profile gardeners. The vulnerability they show. The quality of Ben’s listening. Listen.
Had been looking forward to Ben’s new podcast but the muddled format is hugely disappointing. It spoils good interviews to mix them up and makes each harder to follow. Keeping it simple would work much better.
I haven’t even listened yet but know from listening to Ben’s ‘The Garden Log’ podcast that this will be an exceptional podcast and one that will quickly rise like cream to the very top of the gardening podcast ladder.
Lovely, seasonal, thoughtful new podcast with the gentle and friendly tone that I liked in its predecessor The Garden Log. Companionable and informative, it not only chimed nicely with the bulb planting that I was tackling but also cast out to other gardeners across the world. I briefly wondered whether I might be less interested in gardens not in the northern hemisphere as hardiness zones obviously vary, but then got completely absorbed nonetheless! Not everything has to grow in my tiny English... more
