  • “Do you know what democratization is?”

Who even asks something like this? This pod cast is the audio equivalent of a infomercial except the guests are just sales people selling empty databricks/AI promises to business people they think cannot understand them.

  • It is like TED talks for Data Science

And that’s a good and bad thing. I like TED talks as much as the next guy. The only problem with TED talks is that:

    a) they remain ideas.

    b) are prone to that individual’s opinion.

I have the general feeling that the podcast wants to stay ahead of the curve, pitching the newest ideas, bringing in the “hottest” people of the Data World.

And while all of this can be interesting, it seldom is valuable. Because, just like TED talks, there is little depth to it.

This is, I think, a choice which... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#362 How to Have a Machine Learning Career in 2026 | Marina Wyss, Senior Applied Scientist at Twitch
Q: What networking strategies help you secure interviews?
Extensive, thoughtful networking—researching target companies and people, engaging with their content, and requesting informational conversations or referrals after building a relationship; cold outreach is less effective.
#362 How to Have a Machine Learning Career in 2026 | Marina Wyss, Senior Applied Scientist at Twitch
Q: What should a strong portfolio include to land interviews?
Projects that solve real problems for real clients or nonprofits, with measurable impact, plus a clear demonstration of understanding business constraints, trade-offs, and the ability to communicate results.
#362 How to Have a Machine Learning Career in 2026 | Marina Wyss, Senior Applied Scientist at Twitch
Q: What does the typical hiring process look like for these roles?
Candidates usually encounter a technical screen (often Python-based), followed by on-site rounds including data science and system design interviews, plus behavioral questions; preparation should cover both coding and end-to-end system design.
#362 How to Have a Machine Learning Career in 2026 | Marina Wyss, Senior Applied Scientist at Twitch
Q: So talk me through how AI is changing the machine learning engineer role.
AI is shifting the balance toward design, evaluation, and system-level thinking, with more time spent on planning, stakeholder alignment, and leveraging AI to accelerate coding, while still requiring strong understanding of models and non-deterministic outputs.
#354 Beyond BI: Decision Intelligence with Graphs with Jamie Hutton, CTO at Quantexa
Q: Decision intelligence is a buzzword right now; is it just a rebranding of data-driven decision making, or is there a fundamental shift?
The shift is about making decisions with context, using the network of relationships around data rather than relying on isolated records; it's about a pivot from traditional BI to systems that can reason across connected data to support better, more reliable decisions.
