I am a young mum of 2 boys living in the West Midlands (no where near the sea) my whole life I have dreamed of diving, pursuing a career in marine biology. I’ve always been told to be ‘realistic’ with my dreams. So I ended up being a painter and decorator (no we’re near what I wanted I know🤣). But I just wanted to say, I absolutely love coming here to listen and escape whilst painting, it reminds me to always keep my dreams open, and one day I hope to peruse, you guys keep me motivated and educ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Can plastic DECOY puffins save a species from its rat problem?
Q: So can you explain to me why this project is so important and why you've used these puffin decoys?
The decoys create a convincing colony environment because puffins prefer nesting in colonies; the goal is to attract real puffins back, foster nesting activity, and eventually establish a breeding site, which would signal conservation success and offer a template for other seabird restoration efforts.
Ecosystems are collapsing. This film wants the public to know! - The Ocean News Podcast
Q: What went wrong with the messaging of the National Emergency Briefing, and how do we get people on board?
Messaging needed to extend beyond Westminster, engage communities directly, and empower MPs to act; plan includes screenings and local constituency engagement to translate science into tangible policy and action.
Ecosystems are collapsing. This film wants the public to know! - The Ocean News Podcast
Q: So we're looking at the report stating that critical ecosystems could start collapsing as early as 2030. What does that look like for the UK? What does the fallout look like for Sophie?
A combination of intensified storms, flooding, food and water insecurity, and economic shocks, with cascading effects on supply chains and public health; action hinges on mainstreaming nature investment in security and policy.
Trawling bans spark RECOVERY for Scotland’s seabeds
Q: What should be done in terms of management to help these ecosystems recover, and is passive protection enough or is active intervention needed?
The guest suggests a nuanced approach—protection is necessary but not always sufficient; context-specific actions, such as habitat restoration (e.g., oyster seeding) and tailored management, may help accelerate recovery and enhance ecosystem services.
Trawling bans spark RECOVERY for Scotland’s seabeds
Q: So can you explain a bit about your research findings and what you saw, what marine life you saw, and what the significance of that was?
Dr. Harris describes the Convex C-Scape Survey findings, showing higher abundance and more species inside MPAs, particularly in soft sediment habitats, and explains how these patterns relate to carbon cycling and habitat recovery. He emphasizes that recovery varies by location and is slower for seabed organisms than for fish.
