  • Curiosity Weekly

Here is why I like Curiosity Weekly. It sits neatly between two other science podcasts that I also like. I listen to Something You Should Know and I like it, even thought I wish that Mike Carruthers would sometimes read or at least scan the books written by his guests. Sometimes his questions tend to dumb down the interview too much. At the other end, I listen to Inner Cosmos and I like it, even though I wish that David Eagleman could remember that not all of his listeners are either practicing ... more

  • Professional guests vs. Playground questions

Why would you ask industry professionals the kind of questions you’d ask toddlers and your besties at a nail salon?

The questions are overly general and juvenile, shallow and poorly researched.

  • Propaganda is not science

There is data available. Ignoring it to promote a leftist agenda is not science. Just saying science as if it is a magic incantation that trumps all debate does not make it true.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why Are People Getting Poop Transplants?
Q: What are the biggest challenges with donor matching and long-term outcomes?
Donor microbiomes are highly individualized; matching to the recipient is complex due to niche-specific microbe interactions, immune responses, and the need for a holistic approach including diet and lifestyle to sustain engraftment long-term.
Why Are People Getting Poop Transplants?
Q: How is an FMT actually performed and what does it look like for patients?
Donor material is screened, processed into a slurry under anaerobic conditions, and delivered either via nasogastric tube, colonoscopy, or enema, with capsulated forms (crapsules) increasingly common to improve tolerability.
Why Are People Getting Poop Transplants?
Q: Could you tell us why we do fecal transplants and what we're trying to accomplish with them?
FMT is primarily used to treat gut infections like C. difficile by restoring the microbial ecosystem after antibiotics disrupt it; beyond that, trials are exploring FMT for a range of conditions, but evidence is strongest for C. difficile and more cautious for IBS and other diseases.
How Violent Video Games Shape Perception
Q: Based on all the research you've done, what should listeners take away and possibly change in their approach to gaming or parenting around games?
The harmful effect is not huge but statistically and practically significant; game choice matters and can subtly shape worldviews and interpersonal interactions, so parents and gamers should consider reducing exposure to violent games or balancing with pro-social experiences.
AI in Healthcare Isn’t What You Think
Q: How should clinicians evaluate AI tools beyond just accuracy metrics?
Clinicians should assess how AI affects real-world work, including usability, impact on examination throughput, and whether it meaningfully improves decision-making and patient care, not just statistical performance.
