Bernard Cornwell On The Hardest Book He’s Ever Written
Q: How did you approach Sharpe's voice and casting in the TV adaptation?
I don't see Sean Bean, I hear Sean Bean; the character's voice in my head guided how I described him, and I believe the actor's portrayal was pivotal to bringing Sharpe to life on screen.
Bernard Cornwell On The Hardest Book He’s Ever Written
Q: What was the particular point or turning event in the book?
The central pivot is Sharpe participating in the crossing of the River Adur, a brilliant military maneuver that serves as the dramatic ending of the book, even as I had to adjust the ending when I realized Sharpe could not be present at the original planned moment.
Bernard Cornwell On The Hardest Book He’s Ever Written
Q: Why did you go back to Sharpe and why this period?
I'd written Sharpe for decades and felt there were gaps in his career that could be explored; returning to him allowed me to place him in a significant, challenging moment and to test him against both enemy forces and the brutal winter, giving the story a fresh emotional arc.
Why Readers Return: Characters, Crime & The Feeling They Leave Behind | Chris McDonald
Q: Why did you choose a private investigator as the series lead instead of continuing with a police detective?
I loved the freedom to follow clues outside the rigid rules of policing, which lets me push the plot in directions that feel more dynamic and risky for the characters, while preserving a gritty, realistic vibe.
Go All In: A Call To Read Books
Q: What would you like listeners to do regarding books and reading in daily life?
Embrace reading as a daily, tangible practice—give books as gifts, discuss what you read, build a personal library, and let books nurture your mind and relationships.
