Mailbag: From NIL Deals to Streaming Dreams
Q: Do you remember how ESPN with the NHL in the fall did, and would you as a 15-year-old hockey player enjoy something like a weekly show that flags highlights across the country?
Young fans respond to quick-hit, around-the-country clips and have more appetite for a regionalized or condensed highlight format than a full game, suggesting a streaming product that blends highlights with select live components could boost engagement.
Mailbag: From NIL Deals to Streaming Dreams
Q: The last question this week is from Patrick, and it says, UFC signed with Paramount Plus for $1.7 billion this week. Is now the time for College Hockey to band together and try to deal with one of these streamers?
The UFC deal and the size of streaming rights show big money can exist, but college hockey's fragmentation and smaller national audience make a single streamer deal unlikely in the near term; a consolidated national platform could be beneficial but faces structural and market challenges.
Mailbag: From NIL Deals to Streaming Dreams
Q: Jeremy has a question on the Michigan football fines, and Jeremy wants to know, how much of an impact will a $20 million fine on Michigan for their football scandal impact its hockey team, and will it mean anything if they can spend less money on players?
While the fine is large, Michigan's overall revenue and resources in football are substantial, so the immediate trickle-down to hockey may be limited, though long-term budgeting could adjust spending if penalties are re-evaluated in following years.
Mailbag: From NIL Deals to Streaming Dreams
Q: Next up is Robert, who is asking about the Yale coaching change. Hi Mike, why do you think Keith Allain took so long to announce his retirement? Is there a deeper story there?
There's speculation that postponing the retirement gave assistants a better chance at the job, a loyalty-driven move that could influence the national search dynamics, and August timing makes it harder to conduct a full outside hire while keeping continuity.
Mailbag: From NIL Deals to Streaming Dreams
Q: Hey Mike, in light of the big money being thrown around in the Big Ten hockey circles, do you have any sense of what the top Hockey East stars are getting in their bank accounts?
Numbers vary, but the high end for Hockey East stars is probably in the 100,000 to 150,000 range, with some players around 150,000 and others in the 40,000 to 50,000 range depending on role, with not all deals being apples-to-apples due to different structures like revenue sharing, third-party NIL, and cost of attendance.
