Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

E49 Stephen Moore and Jo Collinge - Ice swimming and teamwork.
Q: What drew you to ice swimming and how did you approach your first events?
Stephen explains he was drawn by the challenge and the discipline it requires, and he talks through the mental and physical steps of preparing, entering the ice, and managing breath and pain during the long kilometer swims.
E51 - Dean Madsen - Training for a 40km Swim with Parkinsons.
Q: What are your next big swims and how are you preparing for them?
I'm aiming for Taupō and potentially Cook Strait after Taupō, with long-distance swims around Gulf Harbour and 20K+ targets in mind, plus experimenting with nutrition strategies and race-day fueling.
E51 - Dean Madsen - Training for a 40km Swim with Parkinsons.
Q: How has Parkinson's changed your approach to training and racing?
It's about planning around tremors and potential muscle tightness, prioritizing slow, controlled training, technique refinement, nutrition, and staying consistent with gym work to support swimming.
E54 - Gráinne Moss - The Jelly Fish Magnet.
Q: What were the biggest differences between crossing the English Channel in 1987 and Topol in 2021 from piloting and feeding perspectives?
Back in 1987, piloting was less precise and there was no way to message supporters during the crossing; feeding relied on more traditional methods and slower information flow, whereas in 2021 there was real-time tracking, more organized on-boat support, and more refined feeding strategies, though the core approach to fueling has remained similar.
E57 - Nic Russell - Kenzie's Gift
Q: What inspired the creation of Kenzie's Gift?
Nic explains that after her daughter Kenzie died of cancer and she faced her own health battles, there was a lack of mental health support for children and families, which led to starting the charity to provide honest conversations and practical support.
