Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ahmed Umar & Mariam Elnozahy
Q: What's next for Growing Phalanges in terms of materials and geographic reach?
There will be more glass, but also explorations into bronze and painting, with exhibitions planned in places like Turkey and Egypt, plus further collaborations and possibly a new direction in printmaking and other media.
Ahmed Umar & Mariam Elnozahy
Q: What does the journey to the number 1,000 entail and what directions do you see for the Glowing Phalanges project beyond glass?
The journey to 1,000 beads continues with exploring new materials and collaborations, including possibilities in bronze and paintings, while maintaining the core of repetition and spiritual reflection that defines the project.
Ahmed Umar & Mariam Elnozahy
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about how you perform around these objects and how this performance finds its way into the practice?
Performance is a necessary outlet for my otherwise shy nature; I use physical movement with sculpture to express something loud and visible, which has culminated in high-profile performances such as the Sudanese bridal dance at the Venice Biennale.
Minh Ngọc Nguyễn & Anna Mustonen
Q: You've got these still life setups that read as symbols; is there a conscious idea behind working with familiar compositions and twisting them to make us think differently?
Yes, the approach leans toward using still life as a conduit to discuss memory, identity, and the politics of representation, while keeping room for personal history and a critical view of cultural imagery.
