  • Inspiring

If only this podcast were required listening for all horse professionals and owners! Great information and a fabulous example of positive exploration and collaboration with so many inspiring guests. A refreshing change from the ‘tribalism’ that so often divides the horse world. Thank you.

  • Eye opening!

Animal welfare is a topic too frequently over looked. I love how this podcast delves deep into how we can improve the quality of life of not just horses but all animals. Its putting a spotlight on practices that for too long have just been accepted because it’s “just how we do things”. Love this podcast!!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

When Love Isn't Enough: What We Owe Our Animals
Q: What is your one wish for animal welfare?
A world where no animal is harmed by humans across any industry, and animals live lives that align with their natural needs and desires, not merely as objects or products for human use.
When Love Isn't Enough: What We Owe Our Animals
Q: What keeps you going through such challenging settings?
A deep passion for animal welfare, the belief that change is possible, and finding value in connecting with people who want to improve conditions; the hope of long-term impact sustains the work.
When Love Isn't Enough: What We Owe Our Animals
Q: What would you say to the idea that education in zoos is effective, given concerns about viewing animals as entertainment?
Education can be meaningful when it connects visitors with authentic behaviors and individual animal stories, not when signs merely recount generic facts; some mixed-species exhibits and authentic interaction can enhance understanding if designed responsibly.
When Love Isn't Enough: What We Owe Our Animals
Q: So can you describe the gap between knowledge and practice in animal welfare within the zoo and horse spaces?
The gap reflects how information about welfare isn't consistently translated into everyday practices, due to a mix of resources, culture, and historic infrastructure; progress exists in modern zoos, but widespread change requires embedded moral duty across all roles.
S6 E5 "But My Horse Is Well Cared For" and Other Stories We Tell Ourselves | Erica Cheung
Q: How can the industry move toward genuinely caring for horses as individuals rather than just as performance assets?
Through collaboration, cultural change, and enculturation that emphasizes both caring for and caring about horses, supported by education, reflective practice, and co-created welfare models involving multiple stakeholders.
