Q: As a COO who came up through the CFO path, what should startup CFOs prioritize in the current environment?
Preserve cash to reach clear milestones, scenario-plan for higher costs and lower revenue, and use the crisis to reassess and redesign the organization for efficiency and stronger foundations.
278. CFO 4.0 Revisited | Driving Change in Finance: Unleashing the Power of Transformational Leadership with Ilana Esterrich
Q: What are the biggest challenges you've faced in driving financial transformation in a not-for-profit context?
Balancing the urgency to modernize with the need to engage a wide range of stakeholders, managing legacy processes and tools, and ensuring that changes are understood and embraced across departments, not just within finance, while maintaining a compelling 'why' for the transformation.
278. CFO 4.0 Revisited | Driving Change in Finance: Unleashing the Power of Transformational Leadership with Ilana Esterrich
Q: What brought you to Planned Parenthood and what is your high-level mandate as CFO there?
I was brought in to focus on key finance transformations, taking over from a predecessor who moved to a COO role, and to build out a future-focused finance function that supports both near-term needs and long-term strategic goals through data-driven reporting, automation, and stronger FP&A capabilities.
277. First 100 Days as a CFO: The Career Strategies Every New CFO Needs to Know with John Lees
Q: What are some of the biggest mistakes new CFOs make in their first 90 to 100 days?
The main mistakes include landing in selection mode rather than showing capability to deliver, failing to check in with the right people early, and not recognizing the importance of the personalities and dynamics within the organization that can either enable or block progress.
279. How AI, Demographics and Change Are Reshaping Finance Careers with Clive Webb
Q: What is the role of the human professional in a world of advancing AI?
To provide trusted analysis and interpretation of data and rules, ensure integrity, and act as a bridge between technology and business value, because machines can predict but humans must reason and contextualize.
