  • Just the info I was looking for on the PA-46 Malibu

Such a great show for those looking at the PA-46 as an option. There is so much to consider when considering whether the upgrade to one of the variants is in order and Joe’s show really goes through all the questions I have had so far. Would definitely recommend!

  • Joe Casey is very informative

I have now listened to all of Joe’s podcasts (they keep coming though!). Several I’ve listened to more than once … intentionally! He has a smooth and positive style that makes you feel like you know him. He seems candid with his thoughts and is clearly very knowledgeable about his topics.

I am a Cirrus owner who would like to jump to the PA46 one day soon. Listening to Joe’s podcasts has helped me to understand the process and learn much more about the steps to accomplish my goals.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ask Me Anything: PA-46 Tips, Turbine Secrets & Weather Wisdom
Q: Dave asks about pulling the P3 circuit breaker during ground power to avoid icing and electrical load issues.
Yes, for long ground or avionics updates, pulling the P3 air circuit breaker can save battery power and prevent icing/probe heat issues; ensure you push it back in afterward and be mindful of windshield and pitot heat settings to avoid damage when ground power is used.
Ask Me Anything: PA-46 Tips, Turbine Secrets & Weather Wisdom
Q: Dave asks about diagnosing turbine engine failure at altitude and when to use Moore lever to handle power rollback.
NG (gas generator) above minimum indicates engine alive; if NG is below, the engine may be dead and you should manage accordingly. In the event of a rollback, pull the Moore lever to regain control and potentially relight; monitor torque, oil pressure, and NG to determine the appropriate action.
Ask Me Anything: PA-46 Tips, Turbine Secrets & Weather Wisdom
Q: Lynn asks how radar color returns (snow vs rain) affect evaluation of icing and wind turbulence risk.
Snow-related returns are usually less dangerous than freezing rain; icing risk hinges on supercooled water and rapid vertical development in storms. Focus on radar where sharp color changes indicate strong updrafts and potential turbulence; use that data to plan avoidance and descent strategies.
Ask Me Anything: PA-46 Tips, Turbine Secrets & Weather Wisdom
Q: Keith asks what is the smartest path from 275 hours in a Cherokee to being ready for a PA46 within 3-5 years.
Build instrument time, ladder up through progressively higher-performance aircraft (preferably transitioning from trainer to a faster, more capable airframe like a Bonanza or similar with retractable gear), accumulate substantial known-icer and retract-time experience, and document this resume to insurance underwriters to demonstrate competency and progress toward a PA46.
Q&A: Vacuum, Pressurization, KFC 150 Approach Logic & ATC Routing
Q: Would you spend money on a new windshield or a new GFC autopilot?
I would absolutely choose the GFC autopilot.
