Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Rachel Abbott, Pan Cancer T
Q: What were the key learnings or turning points that influenced your direction?
Key themes include seizing opportunities even when scary, building confidence through leadership courses and mentorship, and learning to communicate and lead across functions to translate science into clinical impact.
Rachel Abbott, Pan Cancer T
Q: How did you move from academia to biotech leadership?
She describes a non-linear path via roles that blended research, translational work, and leadership opportunities, including a pivotal shift to industry when her program wrapped and opportunities arose at Adaptimmune, eventually taking on senior leadership roles and moving toward a CEO position.
Jonathan Levenson, FireCyte Therapeutics
Q: What prompted the pivot at FireCyte from the initial mechanism hypothesis to discovering what the protein binds to, and how did that change the company?
We realized we needed to identify the protein's actual binding partners; partnering with a company that could screen the human cell surface proteome allowed us to uncover meaningful targets and redefine the biology, delaying a premature conclusion and creating a stronger platform.
Jonathan Levenson, FireCyte Therapeutics
Q: What were the early lessons learned when you moved from academia into industry and started leading teams?
Key lessons were stakeholder management and storytelling: you must communicate in a way that secures funding and buy-in from leaders, while staying true to the science.
Jonathan Levenson, FireCyte Therapeutics
Q: Can you go into a bit more detail as to how viewing the eye as a mini brain affects what you look at when considering modalities and administration?
It reframes the targets and delivery; we can dose near the retina, enabling modalities like antibodies and gene therapies to reach nervous tissue more directly and with fewer systemic challenges than brain delivery would require.
