  • Favorite podcast

I have always had a fear of flying, so much so that our yearly vacation used to cause me months of stress anticipating the flight. Then I started watching Mentour Pilot videos and eventually listening to this podcast and I have learned that knowledge is power and understanding how pilots are trained, how airlines work and how planes actually fly has greatly improved my anxiety. The last time I flew I had very little anxiety and found myself mentally following along with each step of the flight... more

Everything We Know About LaGuardia (Audio-Only)
Q: What are your favorite challenging scenarios in simulation and training, particularly during checks for engine failures or other emergencies?
The most valuable moments are when instructors introduce an unexpected element that forces reactivity and communication under stress, revealing real-time decision-making and debriefing insights that strengthen future responses.
Everything We Know About LaGuardia (Audio-Only)
Q: On Boeing airplanes, the yoke is between the legs, while on Airbus, they are on the sides. Does that make the transition from first officer to captain more difficult? Is there any extra training that one has to do?
There is some recalibration when moving seats, but it does not significantly affect control handling; pilots switch seat assignments and adapt quickly, with a brief period of adjustment for seat position, then normal procedure resumes.
From Intercepting Bombers To Flying Passengers?! (Audio-Only Version)
Q: Any actionable tips for handling a CIRCLING approach failure or similar non-aviation mistakes?
Learn to compartmentalize the error in the moment, don't dwell on it, and revisit it in the debrief with a plan to fix it for next time.
You Should Never Mess With Security On a Plane! (Audio-Only Version)
Q: When you do a walk around, are there set procedures? What do you do when you can't feel or see something? Is it informal? Dents, drips, and remove before flight tags?
Yes, walkarounds are formalized with a checklist in the manual. Look for specific items like visible damage, leaks, and wear, using defined criteria. There are usually two sets of eyes on the aircraft, often including ground crew, to catch issues early.
You Should Never Mess With Security On a Plane! (Audio-Only Version)
Q: I was wondering if you'd be willing to share any thoughts on what might be good to keep in mind ahead of the psychological aptitude test? How is it usually conducted and whether you have any tips on how best to prepare?
Be honest about your personality; the tests are designed to reveal true tendencies. Practice helps with the IQ portions, but authenticity is key. Different airlines look for different profiles, so there is no one-size-fits-all. Do a few practice exams to gain familiarity and confidence, but avoid overthinking the responses.
