  • It’s like hanging out with your nerdy dog friends!

Just like the title says, listening to this podcast feels like you’re just hanging out with your nerdy dog friends. I adore training my dog and I’m an environmental scientist, so listening to this podcast combines my love of those two things, along with education! I find myself nodding along and basically talking to Kayla and her guests each episode on my commutes (though I know they can’t hear me). I’ve taken a deep dive since discovering this podcast and can confirm that all the episodes are i... more

I’ve been listening to this Podcast for a couple years now and it’s never not amazing! Kayla consistently puts out really interesting and informative episodes. It’s kind of absurd how much I’ve been able to learn about dog training and conservation through just one podcast. If you’re into dogs and conservation this podcast is definitely for you!

CWD Dogs with Brenna Aizen
Q: What is chronic wasting disease? What does it affect? Why is it scary?
Chronic wasting disease is a prion disease that affects members of the deer family, causing fatal degeneration in the brain, leading to holes forming in the brain. It is highly infectious and always fatal once an animal is infected.
Getting into Grad School with Dr. Charles van Rees
Q: How do you find these people? Where do you go from this thought that I want to go to grad school?
I think reading the scientific literature is gigantic. Looking at textbooks and authors who align with your interests is a good start.
Getting into Grad School with Dr. Charles van Rees
Q: So Charles, you are now an assistant professor? A question mark? Tell me, what has changed in your role since we last had you?
I've transitioned to a new role at Odom. I ended up unexpectedly going on the professor job hunt last year, realized I wanted to do it, and got extraordinarily lucky.
Genetic Gobledeygook: HOW Do We Learn From Scat? with Ellen Dymit
Q: So Ellen, why don't we start out with just a couple definitions. So the three that I hear kind of tossed around most often in lab meetings that still have me really confused are meta barcoding, microsatellites, and SNPs. What are they?
Ellen explains that meta barcoding is a method used to differentiate species by reading a specific region of the genome, while SNPs represent the basic unit of genetic variation among individuals.
The Conservation Cost of the War on Drugs with Nicholas Magliocca
Q: What is the relationship between drug trafficking and wildlife trafficking?
Nicolas highlights that although there's some overlap, wildlife trafficking is not as documented; rather, traffickers often poach opportunistically in vulnerable areas opened up by drug trafficking.
