过去10天，袁莉在台湾进行了一场“政治旅行”，见了许多从基层到高层的政治人物。但她印象最深的人之一，却是一位三十岁的职业女性Pam。过去一年，Pam发起了一项应对战争威胁的培训计划，自己出资、组织危机应对演练。
做社运、参与公共事务，像每天不停推巨石的西西弗斯，很容易神形俱疲。面对高山，Pam笑说，“那我可以跳着走下去。”面对战争威胁，该做的准备要做，咖啡也要喝，陪家人露营，日子也要好好过。“不要为了愿景牺牲自己，而是让愿景和自己一起长大。”

那时的北京，一群朋友聚在家里，煮锅白面条，分着吃一个西瓜，一边唱着歌，畅谈小说、哲学到深夜。
这是查建英记忆里的八十年代。在《八十年代访谈录》中，她用一组词描绘当时：激情、贫乏、热忱、反叛、浪漫、理想主义，也有肤浅、疯狂和知识断层。日子并不富裕，但思想是澎湃的。
