前新疆警察张亚博离开中国后，公开讲述了自己在新疆公安系统工作九年间的经历。他的证词提供了罕见的基层内部视角，但他也反复强调，自己只是执行命令，是国家机器里的一枚“小螺丝钉”，甚至认为自己承受的痛苦不比维吾尔人少。采访结束后，袁莉始终无法摆脱一个问题：一个人为什么能够清楚地讲出自己受到的伤害，却很难看见自己帮助体制给别人造成的伤害？

2014年至2023年，张亚博在新疆公安系统工作了九年，参与执行中国政府对维吾尔人的大规模监控、拘禁和强制同化政策。他曾在看守所、村级警务室和拘禁营工作，押送戴着头套和手铐的维吾尔被拘押者，也监督过被强制派往棉花田劳动的维吾尔人。
他反复说，自己只是在执行命令，是国家机器上的一枚“小螺丝钉”。他也坚持认为，自己同样是这个体制的受害者。

和查老师谈“流亡”的那一期茶话会中，我认为查老师对项飙的批评，甚至称其为“小狐狸”，是不妥当的。抛开“项老师在中国有没有想要保护的人”这个前提不谈，我认为不是每个革命者非得玉石俱焚才叫有骨气。我认为项老师是在他力所能及的范围内帮助，开导中国的年轻人。甚至在某种程度上，我作为锵锵三人行和不明白播客长期的听众和捐赠者，我认为项飙老师比查老师更关心中国的年轻人。
