Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ardal O'Hanlon
Q: Did you have to go back and plant extra clues without making it too formulaic?
He discusses balancing clever plotting with not overdoing the formula, ensuring readers have enough seeds to follow while keeping the mystery engaging and not obvious, with input from collaborators like editors and readers.
Ardal O'Hanlon
Q: Did you always guess correctly when they handed you the scripts?
The guest explains that after many years with detective fiction, he learned the cadence and could anticipate the formula after reading multiple scripts, but emphasizes that satisfying clues must be planted from the start so readers can solve along rather than guess all at once.
Dorothy Koomson
Q: What inspired the depiction of the boarding-school environment and the themes of elitism and equality?
I wanted to show how wealth and power create a closed world where secrets stay buried, but also to counterbalance that with a message that everyone is equal and has a voice. The contrast between opulence and the darker undercurrents of trauma and abuse drives the narrative.
Dorothy Koomson
Q: How did you approach building the mystery at the heart of The Quiet Girls?
I started from a premise with high stakes—a kid going missing at a prestigious boarding school and a teacher connected to the case—then I let Kez, a profiler, navigate it step by step, layering clues and red herrings while keeping the core question intact: what really happened?
