Whatever is happening in the news right now, there's a book diving deep into the topic. As a journalist I love following the latest headlines, but wanted to take my depth of knowledge to the next level. Join me as I speak to experts - mostly authors - on the topics they have spent extensive time researching and reporting on. The topics may vary, but the conversational tone stays the same.

  • Splendid

Ms. McGann goes one-on-one with an eclectic range of authors for half-hour chats about subjects for whom they both share a passion. As a Canadian, I find her mid-Atlantic Irish accent is a real treat. My introduction to Booked In came via a search for David McWilliams interviews, following the Aug/24 publication of his book, Money: A Story of Humanity. Great chat.

  • Fantastic.

Such a welcome change to some of the run of the mill podcasts. You can hear the enthusiasm and genuine interest from Hilary. Vibrant conversations with each of the guests given the time to voice their answers and elaborate so that each topic is unravelled, and so down to Earth that it feels like I’m in a coffee shop sharing a conversation with them. Love it!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

CHRISTINA HILLSBERG: Women in the CIA, Agents of Change
Q: What was it like to cover significant political changes in the U.S. presidency, and did that affect how the CIA operated?
Administrations influenced briefing styles and political engagement, but officers served whomever was elected; the analytic and clandestine sides tended to lean differently politically, and changes in leadership shaped priorities and the format of leadership daily briefs.
CHRISTINA HILLSBERG: Women in the CIA, Agents of Change
Q: Can you share insights into the challenges women faced in the organization's early decades and how the culture changed?
Women faced stereotyping and limited advancement; many were hired as secretaries, and there was a lack of sisterhood due to isolation in field stations; mentoring groups emerged in the 1980s, and enforcement of gender equality gradually improved through lawsuits and leadership changes.
CHRISTINA HILLSBERG: Women in the CIA, Agents of Change
Q: How did you come to join the CIA, and what drew you to espionage rather than humanitarian work?
A recruiter visited my college, I spoke Swahili and Zulu, and the opportunity to use foreign languages and advise policymakers attracted me; I was initially planning humanitarian work, but the CIA offered a path that combined my language skills with impactful public service.
ANDREW LOWNIE: The Entitled Former Prince
Q: Were you surprised by Andrew's arrest and did your research predict such outcomes?
I was surprised at how quickly the arrest came; my sources warned of big February news, but the speed of the development exceeded my expectations, and the Epstein revelations now seem to corroborate earlier suspicions.
AVI SHLAIM: Memoirs of An Arab Jew
Q: What was the catalyst for change in how you felt about Israel as a country?
Shlaim describes his gradual disenchantment with Israel starting after the June 1967 war, leading him to support a single democratic state solution.
