Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Global Trade Outlook: The Canada-U.S. Tariffs Challenge
Q: Steve, is this a temporary situation or a new normal that business leaders should plan around?
The relationship is currently rocky and likely to be rockier before improving. However, broad US support for USMCA and the importance of the Canada–U.S. partnership suggest that a return to a more stable, cooperative framework is likely eventually, even if conditions worsen in the near term.
Global Trade Outlook: The Canada-U.S. Tariffs Challenge
Q: Francois, will the latest trade developments have a lasting impact on sector-specific investor sentiment or broader market trends?
The situation is not a one-off event but part of a broader trade realignment. In the near term, markets may react emotionally, but longer-term dynamics depend on policy direction and negotiation outcomes. Inflationary pressures from protectionism could weigh on valuations, particularly for growth stocks, and influence asset allocation toward hard assets or inflation hedges if the trend persists.
Global Trade Outlook: The Canada-U.S. Tariffs Challenge
Q: Michael, given the momentum in the economies despite tariffs, how might the newly imposed tariffs change the narrative for growth and investment in Canada and the U.S. going forward?
Economies have shown resilience, with U.S. growth supported by strong domestic spending (AI infrastructure, wealth effect) while Canada has been weaker but could rebound. Tariffs are likely to create a marginal drag on growth and a slight negative impact on U.S. equities and bonds, with inflationary pressures making gold and other inflation hedges more appealing. The real effects will emerge in consumer prices, purchasing power, and sector-specific outcomes, particularly in chemicals, electronics, and forestry-related industries.
Global Trade Outlook: The Canada-U.S. Tariffs Challenge
Q: Steve, what in your view led to the breakdown in the latest round of Canada–U.S. trade discussion, and which areas of disagreement are most important for businesses to understand?
The breakdown was the result of a cumulative set of issues, especially around autos, aluminum, and the tariff framework. Canada faced potential demands to match U.S. tariff levels across products and to influence Canada's trade agreements, which would have been difficult to accept, given Canada's existing commitments and economic interests. The most important disagreements for businesses are around auto tariffs, aluminum duties, and the potential constraints on Canada's ability to diversify its trade relationships.
How Failure Shaped Stephen Smith’s Success
Q: When did you start reading The Economist, and how has that influenced your worldview as a business leader?
I started reading it decades ago, around the time I discussed it with the Queen's University economics department head; the publication's liberal economic values and independent stance have influenced my approach to business and public policy.
