  • useful spiritual insight every week

Wise, engaging, pithy. Deeply respectful of and steeped in tradition but not afraid of modernity and science. Highly recommended.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

25/32 Shemot with Dr Angela Erisman
Q: Could you maybe speak a little bit more about that? And what are the other important elements that we need to be on the lookout for as we begin this year's cycle of Exodus?
The discussion emphasizes that Exodus blends history with literary fiction, using motifs like kingship symbols (staff, snake) and three striking episodes to build a multi-layered political allegory that both reflects historical contexts and speaks to universal themes of leadership and liberation.
Beha'alotekha with Angela Roskop Erisman
Q: Why is Miriam's role framed so differently from Aaron's in the critique of Moses, and what does the text suggest about who holds authority in this story?
The text highlights the tension between personal critique and communal leadership, showing how Miriam's prophetic voice and Aaron's priestly role interact to question who can legitimately influence and oversee Moses' leadership.
Beha'alotekha with Angela Roskop Erisman
Q: What's your take on the idea that the Exodus narrative is best understood as political allegory rather than straightforward history?
It allows us to interpret leadership dynamics with a lens that acknowledges history while recognizing the narrative's rhetoric and political aims, offering a more nuanced understanding of prophecy, authority, and governance.
25/29 Miketz with Rabbi David Zucker
Q: What is the dynamic between divine guidance and human initiative in Joseph's story, especially during his time in prison and rise to power?
God's presence is felt as guidance, but not a predetermined future; Joseph acts with agency, and the Pharaoh's leadership is aided by divine-inspired wisdom rather than a fixed plan.
25/29 Miketz with Rabbi David Zucker
Q: Rabbi Zucker, how do you frame the Mishnah from Avot 3.15 in relation to free will and divine knowledge?
I begin by affirming that God is omniscient, yet I argue that God makes a conscious choice not to look into the future, which preserves human freedom and responsibility.
