  • Getting an Engaging Basketball Bench

Excellent subject that coaches deal with during the course of a game and season. I like what was mentioned about giving players roles on the bench while cheering on the successes of their teammates. It is a numbers game as you want to keep players who are engaged and know their specific role on the team. This subject needs to be addressed more often. Thank you for this episode.

  • Where is Calistoga??

I’m a first time coach starting next week for St Eugene’s 8th grade basketball in Santa Rosa and found this podcast in attempt to prepare for the season. In just two episodes I’ve listened to, I have soaked up a ton of good information.

    Side note:

Calistoga is in Napa County, 25 min east of me. Fyi, French Laundry is overrated.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep 2897 What Does it Actually Take to Win a Championship? With Coach Noah
Q: What should I prioritize in the first days of tryouts given football commitments?
Start with cerebral, but purposeful, offense/defense walkthroughs, quickly establish playbooks, and give players material they can study at home; then begin implementing on the floor as soon as possible to build muscle memory.
Ep 2888 Teachhoops.com Member Call
Q: What would you do if you had to make a decision about staying or leaving for another district?
The guidance was to stay at least this year, work 110%, and simultaneously start looking for opportunities closer to home or in districts with a better fit, while building connections and evaluating options with the AD and administrators. The responder emphasized following your gut and not waiting too long to make a move if you sense the fit isn't right.
Ep 2887 Jay Wright on the State of Youth Basketball: Why "Attitude" is the Only (Part 3)
Q: What early coaching philosophy do you encourage for game acceleration and decision making?
The approach is to run offense to score but not look like you are simply running plays; players should learn to read the defense, make quick decisions, and prioritize scoring opportunities while maintaining team cohesion.
Ep 2887 Jay Wright on the State of Youth Basketball: Why "Attitude" is the Only (Part 3)
Q: If you could teach one drill today, what would it be and what outcome would you expect?
He would teach a catch-and-shoot drill to emphasize catching ready to shoot, keeping eyes on the rim, and developing the habit of shooting immediately when open to maximize scoring opportunities.
Ep 2887 Jay Wright on the State of Youth Basketball: Why "Attitude" is the Only (Part 3)
Q: What advice would you give to young coaches looking back on their career?
He stresses that relationships with players matter more than wins or championships in the long run, and that investing time with every player, including 13th and 12th men, builds a culture that endures beyond a single season.
