  • Getting an Engaging Basketball Bench

Excellent subject that coaches deal with during the course of a game and season. I like what was mentioned about giving players roles on the bench while cheering on the successes of their teammates. It is a numbers game as you want to keep players who are engaged and know their specific role on the team. This subject needs to be addressed more often. Thank you for this episode.

  • Where is Calistoga??

I’m a first time coach starting next week for St Eugene’s 8th grade basketball in Santa Rosa and found this podcast in attempt to prepare for the season. In just two episodes I’ve listened to, I have soaked up a ton of good information.

    Side note:

Calistoga is in Napa County, 25 min east of me. Fyi, French Laundry is overrated.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep 2906 Why Are "Office Hours" the Most Underutilized Tool
Q: What role does mental preparation play in a comeback season for a young team?
Mental prep is crucial; incorporate visualization, self-talk, and a routine that helps players leave distractions at the door, building resilience and confidence so they see small victories and stay committed through a tough stretch.
Ep 2906 Why Are "Office Hours" the Most Underutilized Tool
Q: How can I turn around a team struggling to score against zone defenses?
Work on attacking the rim with two-foot attacks, introduce attack-the-rim reads, and balance shooting with aggressive driving to collapse zones and create open shots; also integrate ball reversals and skip passes to maximize scoring opportunities.
Ep 2901 Teachhoops.com Member Call
Q: What is the best way to get two and three open when defenders are denying the middle?
Use screening for the other player while maintaining spacing, and implement a sequence where the guard at the end of the play and the bigs create back cuts and misdirection so the middle players become open for the return pass or reversal.
Ep 2897 What Does it Actually Take to Win a Championship? With Coach Noah
Q: What should I prioritize in the first days of tryouts given football commitments?
Start with cerebral, but purposeful, offense/defense walkthroughs, quickly establish playbooks, and give players material they can study at home; then begin implementing on the floor as soon as possible to build muscle memory.
Ep 2888 Teachhoops.com Member Call
Q: What would you do if you had to make a decision about staying or leaving for another district?
The guidance was to stay at least this year, work 110%, and simultaneously start looking for opportunities closer to home or in districts with a better fit, while building connections and evaluating options with the AD and administrators. The responder emphasized following your gut and not waiting too long to make a move if you sense the fit isn't right.
