  • Getting an Engaging Basketball Bench

Excellent subject that coaches deal with during the course of a game and season. I like what was mentioned about giving players roles on the bench while cheering on the successes of their teammates. It is a numbers game as you want to keep players who are engaged and know their specific role on the team. This subject needs to be addressed more often. Thank you for this episode.

Love this podcast found out about it by just search for coaching tips because I got inspired to one time become a head coach. Right now my third year as a rec ball coach but with my past achievements of being a top athlete in my state growing up but a freak knee injury in college finally after 20yrs and coaching my 9yr old I got something I can use my talent towards with training the youth and coaching

  • Where is Calistoga??

I’m a first time coach starting next week for St Eugene’s 8th grade basketball in Santa Rosa and found this podcast in attempt to prepare for the season. In just two episodes I’ve listened to, I have soaked up a ton of good information.

    Side note:

Calistoga is in Napa County, 25 min east of me. Fyi, French Laundry is overrated.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep 1973 Teachhoops.com Coaching Call
Q: How should practice time be allocated between offense and defense?
The emphasis should be on defensive pressure and turning teams over, with the offense designed to counter that pressure and still function against zones or pressure, including implementing a few core rules and quick hitters for offensive reads.
Ep 1973 Teachhoops.com Coaching Call
Q: What offensive approach do you think would suit the team best given their guard-heavy lineup?
The coach suggests leaning toward a Read and React approach, with the possibility of a more structured option like swing or flex if needed, depending on the players' IQ and how much they can commit to practicing new systems.
Ep 1972 The Sport Parent Confessions ( Hey Sammi)
Q: Today, a mom whose daughter quit out of nowhere and won't say a single word about why.
Sammi explains that the reason is rarely about the sport itself and that you should stop pressuring with direct questions. Instead, she recommends creating a safe, low-pressure space—often in casual settings like car rides or walks—where the teen can share at her own pace. If she does reveal a reason, acknowledge it without judgment and avoid turning the conversation into a debate; if she still quits, keep the door open for future re-engagement.
Ep 1968 Winning vs. Player Development: Navigating the Ultimate Coaching Paradox (Part 1)
Q: What is the central shift you think needs to happen in youth basketball development?
Prioritize long-term skill development, fundamentals, and understanding over rushing to win; keep practice fun and game-like so kids stay engaged and improve across multiple basics.
Ep 1943 Inside the Mind of a Championship Coach ( Part 2 )
Q: What would you tell your younger self about coaching?
Be yourself and don't try to imitate others; authentic leadership builds trust and helps players stay focused.
