Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Low cost, locally produced zero emissions nitrogen fertilizer with Frere Byrne PlasmaLeap Technologies
Q: So tell me more about PlasmaLeap, what it does, and where the idea came from?
PlasmaLeap is a climate-tech company that builds electricity-driven chemical reactors to tackle high-emitting industrial syntheses, with a focus on nitrogen chemicals for agriculture and mining and hydrocarbon fuels for heavy industry. The idea emerged from a history of electrifying chemical processes and a desire to decentralize production, enabling zero-emissions, modular plants that can be deployed on farms or regional hubs and powered by renewable electricity.
Cow feed efficiency, the greatest area of untapped potential for beef production, with Matt Wilson West Virginia University
Q: And for people who are not animal scientists, why is this so important?
Because understanding and measuring feed efficiency ties directly to the ecological and economic footprints of beef production; it helps quantify how much feed, water, and energy are needed to produce a unit of beef, enabling smarter breeding, management, and policy decisions that can lower costs and emissions.
Creating a carbon neutral beef operation with Robert Mackenzie, Mackas Australian Black Angus Beef
Q: How do you communicate and validate your sustainability claims to customers and the market?
By maintaining rigorous data collection (soil samples, methane measurements, and productivity metrics), using transparent reporting platforms, and engaging with buyers through programs like boxed beef while highlighting the story of sustainable farming through industry groups and education programs.
Breeding for profitable, efficient, locally adapted and sustainable cattle with Troy Rowan University of Tennessee
Q: How do you handle environmental variation when estimating genetic merit?
We model out environmental noise using contemporary groups and records across seasons. The aim is to separate what the animal can pass to its offspring from what the environment contributed to its phenotype, so that the selection tools reflect true genetic potential rather than situational performance.
Breeding for profitable, efficient, locally adapted and sustainable cattle with Troy Rowan University of Tennessee
Q: What are the main traits you're trying to measure to improve genetic evaluations for grazing cattle?
We're focusing on traits related to forage efficiency, cow maintenance energy, lactation and calf growth, and how these traits manifest across different grazing environments. Since direct measurement in grazing systems is hard, we use proxies (wearables, gas emissions, image-based phenotyping) to estimate these traits and build more robust genomic predictions.
