Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Bryan Manning of Bosse-de-Nage
Q: Can you tell us about the album artwork and who conceived the concept?
We hired an artist who created a maximalist, colorful collage that stood out far from typical black metal aesthetics; it became the cover and defined the visual vibe of Hidden Fires Burn Hottest.
Bryan Manning of Bosse-de-Nage
Q: What were the challenges and opportunities during the pandemic for your release timing?
We kept writing during the pandemic, moved rehearsal spaces, started families, and used the downtime to perfect the new music and artwork, which allowed the album to come together slowly but with a clear plan for the release.
Bryan Manning of Bosse-de-Nage
Q: How did Boose-de-Nage come together, and what role did The Flenser play in your early releases?
The band formed out of long-time friends in the Bay Area, evolving from earlier projects into a more experimental black metal direction, and The Flenser offered a CD release early on when they were just getting started, helping the band gain traction.
Bryan Manning of Bosse-de-Nage
Q: What sparked your interest in metal, and what was your first encounter with black metal?
I was drawn in during junior high by bands like Metallica and Slayer, with Pantera making a strong impact that pushed me toward exploring more extreme sounds, eventually leading to death metal and then black metal through a mixtape and later discoveries like Nordic Metal.
Eric Peterson of Testament
Q: With a 14th record and a long touring career ahead, what keeps you inspired to write and perform?
Fresh blood in the band and the opportunity to explore heavier, newer influences while still staying true to Testament's identity keeps everything exciting and motivated.
