Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The real reason American men are struggling
Q: What do you think is the biggest misconception in our national conversation about the state of the American man?
The biggest misconception is that self-improvement in career or body alone defines worth; true humanity comes from relational depth, emotional well-being, and caring connections with family and friends, which are often overlooked in crisis framing.
The real reason American men are struggling
Q: Why did you include queer men in this portrait of masculinity, and what value does their perspective add?
Including Nate and Ryan, who are queer and trans, adds texture to the broader portrait by showing that masculinity is shaped by lived experiences across sexual orientation and gender identity, and that the constructs of manhood are learned early and then lived in complex, diverse ways.
The real reason American men are struggling
Q: Let's talk about the four characters in your book. Tell us who these four guys are.
The four men are Ryan, Gideon, Joseph, and Nate, each representing different backgrounds and life trajectories, from a Mohawk man dealing with sexuality and violence, to a West Point graduate facing identity crisis, to a law student and Iraq veteran dealing with trauma, and finally a young, trans man navigating gender and economic precarity.
He said yes to an IT job. He ended up enslaved in a scam compound.
Q: What happened when Red Bull tried to escape, and how did you react?
Red Bull attempted to disguise his escape with forged documents and plotted a plan to return home, which led to him being captured, beaten, and held hostage; I felt a deep mix of guilt and responsibility and pivoted to trying to help him within ethical boundaries, fearing for his life.
How to make nostalgia your psychological superpower
Q: I guess we need to start by having you clearly and fully defining nostalgia.
Nostalgia originated as a clinical concept but now is understood as a multifaceted, future-oriented sentiment that can be personal or historical, often triggered by negative states and serving to regulate emotions, inspire action, and strengthen social bonds.
