Bibios, Heather Flies, Hawthorn Flies, Blossom Flies, Love Bugs - you name it. An interesting critter that .. for some reason seems more popular in Europe rather than the US. Whazzup with that?
I was thinking about doing this episode having lunch outside one day, and bemoaning the fact that I didn't have any pictures of these guys that I could publish on the blog. At that moment a bibio that landed on the table in front of me. Of course I w... more
Hey all - all about Quill Gordons and Theodore Gordon. Hope you enjoy it!
Hey all - I don't have any pics of an adult Epeorus pleuralis but here are some nymphs. Note the two tails and the flat, triangular body with eyes on the top of their head. Also note the broad gills on the abdomen - they are always moving.

If you like macroinvertebrates or fishing this is your podcast. I love his voice which is super peaceful. I enjoy the history bits thrown in too. I like that he’s got his sound set up right too. Wish he’d make more! Job well done. One of my favorites 🦗🪰🕷️
I love macros and teach middle schoolers on field trips as a volunteer for a program called salmon watch, have been expanding this offering slowly at my job at a watershed council in Portland OREGON. Hearing your show is encouraging me to look into this fishing stuff too- but really I love the nexus of all the pieces, bugs, water, fish, ties/craft, food, quiet nature time, and on and on.
Anyway thank you so much for providing this content in your special way. Please don’t stop. I especially lo... more
Love the pod! Learn so much - the latest ver interesting - worms! I was bummed to hear talk of a time down stream when it may float away - but will enjoy it as long as you keep your line in the water!
I have been studying stream insects for over fourth years as an amateur .. been tying flies for same . I grew up in New York on Long Island and fished upstate . My first book bought back in the early 1970s was flicks guide... I think now I own pretty much all the books and studies in existence now since then. My point is that this podcast is incredible. I love the history of the ties and all the information on our “bugs”. I also appreciate the Latin and the pronunciation so now I can speak wi... more
This is a great listen for anyone interested in the aquatic life that sustains trout and other fish. A great deal of information is presented, but never in a way that feels overwhelming. Even as someone who has studied aquatic insects as they relate to trout for the last three decades, I have still been able to pick up many insights. For beginners, this podcast will serve as a great launching point for deeper study of aquatic invertebrates if they so desire.
