  • Thanks!

I work at a government agency helping the elderly and have watched people suffer as a result of are services. I’ve watched people get lazy as we provide for the basic function of life. Turns out if you get free services and just sit in front of a tv it comprises your quality of life and shaves a couple years off too. That being said from welfare, abortion, European/Middle East conflict I believe the church instead of the government is the answer to some of the biggest problem facing society. Or ... more

The Rich Sacramental Theology of Persecuted Anabaptists (While Reformation Wars Raged) - Dean Taylor
Q: So Dean, what were the dominant issues in the Reformation about sacraments, and how did early Anabaptists respond?
Dean explains that the early Anabaptists pushed back against the idea that mere doctrinal correctness justified sacramental validity, emphasizing faith, life, and embodied practice, and arguing against how church and state alliances distorted sacraments.
Early Church Texts Led Me to Adopt, then Reject, Infant Baptism - David Bercot
Q: How should listeners approach these controversial quotes to understand early church practices without cherry-picking?
The guest advocates examining entire works and context rather than relying on isolated proof-text quotes. He emphasizes considering the epistemological limits of the sources, the historical settings (e.g., plague periods influencing baptismal practices), and the coexistence of multiple practices within the same broad tradition.
Early Church Texts Led Me to Adopt, then Reject, Infant Baptism - David Bercot
Q: How do you interpret Origen's statements on paideia and baptism in Romans, given the strong emphasis on infant baptism in later tradition?
He emphasizes reading the full context of Origen's writings, noting that Origen discusses paideia (often translated as little children) and that in Romans commentary his views are nuanced. The interpretation suggests that Origen may not be prescribing universal infant baptism, and that baptismal practice in the early centuries was complex, sometimes tied to emergency baptisms rather than a blanket rule for all infants.
Early Church Texts Led Me to Adopt, then Reject, Infant Baptism - David Bercot
Q: What was the final piece that shifted your view, leading you away from your Anglican priesthood and toward Anabaptist beliefs?
The pivotal moment came while compiling the Dictionary of Early Christian Beliefs; the breadth of evidence showing belief in infant baptism coexisting with believer's baptism, and the context around specific quotes, made him question whether infant baptism was universally correct. This, combined with the written context of early church practice and the burden of proof, led to a cautious rejection of infant baptism as a required practice.
Early Church Texts Led Me to Adopt, then Reject, Infant Baptism - David Bercot
Q: What initially convinced you that infant baptism was correct, and what changed your mind later?
The guest describes growing up taught in favor of infant baptism, then, through studying The Ante-Nicene Fathers and early church writers, realizing that infant baptism was not as uniformly practiced as he believed. Encountering quotes from early figures like Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, and especially Cyprian led him to see that believers' baptism and infant baptism coexisted in various communities, prompting gradual openness to other possibilities before ultimately adopting a believer's baptism stance.
