Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep. 377 - Welcome to Utah with David Meikle
Q: How did your education influence your path into illustration and then landscape painting?
The mix of design fundamentals and painting training gave me the ability to understand composition, typography, and concept, which I later translated into landscape painting by focusing on design depth, detail, and the overall layout of a scene. This crossover allowed me to approach painting with a designer's mindset, emphasizing structure and visual impact.
Ep. 377 - Welcome to Utah with David Meikle
Q: What was your college art experience like?
The experience blended a strong grounding in illustration with exposure to graphic design, which pushed me toward the commercial side of art. I completed two degrees—Graphic Design and Illustration—and even after graduation continued to work in a design studio while pursuing painting at night, which helped me develop a balanced, market-aware approach to art.
Ep. 375 - First Look: Western Art Collector April Issue
Q: What makes Maynard Dixon's Cloud World such a landmark piece in Western art?
Its dramatic scale, the way the sky and land interplay, and its long history of exhibition and acclaim make it a touchstone for Western landscape painting and a symbol of the genre's peak achievements.
Ep. 373 - 2026 Heard Indian Fair & Market
Q: What sparked your collaboration with Western painters and how did that begin?
It started from the bottom, with honorable mentions in markets, which motivated me to push for first place and then publications; Russ Hoover proposed a collaboration idea to connect me with painters, leading to a more authentic fusion of Hopi imagery with Western painting and publications.
Ep. 372 - Critters and Creatures: A Conversation with Randal Dutra
Q: At what point did you realize this could be my career or was it always going to be that way?
I wouldn't recommend this to anybody looking at a career... Eventually, if you're talented and disciplined, you will find you have a career.
