Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Effective Crew Resource Management with Capt. Mario Jimenez
Q: Can you give us a quick summary of your flight in the MD-10 regarding expectation bias?
The incident involved a loss of hydraulic power which nearly resulted in striking a fire truck due to a miscommunication during the engine shutdown process.
Effective Crew Resource Management with Capt. Mario Jimenez
Q: What are some of the biggest challenges pilots face when it comes to crew resource management?
It really boils down to one word, and that word is character.
Colonel Dale “Boots” Hill on Combat, Command, and Calm Under Pressure
Q: How do you approach teaching pilots to handle in-flight emergencies?
First of all, always fly the airplane. Don't fly into the ground while you're checking checklists or thinking things through.
Colonel Dale “Boots” Hill on Combat, Command, and Calm Under Pressure
Q: What's the importance of teamwork, even for a highly trained solo pilot, in such an event?
Having another knowledgeable wingman and support from the operations officer helped back me up on the checklist and provided reassurance during the emergency.
Colonel Dale “Boots” Hill on Combat, Command, and Calm Under Pressure
Q: What inspired you to share that story?
The memories from when the hydraulic pump failed were so vivid. Every time after that, when I shut down my engine, I'd hear that same whine and it brought that moment back to me.
