  • Bring back Rob Reider

Production quality and ‘listenability’ has dropped precipitately since Rob’s departure. It is now far less engaging and editing standards have fallen.

  • New Host

ILAFFT was a great podcast with Rob Reiser. I learned a lot and it was a fun way to do some hanger flying. For some reason, and with no acknowledgement or explanation they replaced Rob as the host. Rob has taken his talents to his own podcast, The Reiser Report and I migrated my listening over there

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

134. Right Airplane, Wrong Airport
Q: What are the main takeaways for instructors and students to prevent this in the future?
Emphasize meticulous pre-flight briefings, realistic planning, familiarization with airports and airspace, and thorough post-flight debriefs to reinforce learning and accountability.
134. Right Airplane, Wrong Airport
Q: Set up the story for us, what happened that day?
Jamie explains that the flight was ill-prepared: a rusty client, insufficient navigation planning, and hubris from a relatively confident instructor led to disorientation and a misdirected cross-country flight, ending with a landing at the wrong airport.
133. When the Elevator Freezes
Q: What ultimately caused the event and what was learned after the aircraft was on the ground?
Post-flight inspection revealed a fatigued bracket holding the vertical stabilizer had sheared, causing the controls to bind; modifications were then recommended and implemented to reinforce that structure to prevent recurrence.
133. When the Elevator Freezes
Q: How did you control altitude and manage the approach when the elevator continued to bind?
We kept a steady approach with careful speed management, used the long runway to our advantage, and relied on timing and control inputs, repeatedly freeing and re-engaging elevator control until we could touch down.
133. When the Elevator Freezes
Q: So walk us through what happened next, after the pre-flight and setup?
We experienced a progressive loss of elevator authority during climb with the nose pitching up; after attempts to free the control, we declared an emergency, coordinated with ATC, and managed a long final to a safe runway while evaluating the binding and preparing for the worst.
