  • Clear, concise, & smart!

As a newly hired behavior consultant at a shelter, and long time behavior nerd, this show is pure gold! Thank you for sharing your wisdom and experience! These are the kind of episodes I can listen to multiple times because each time I will hear it through a different lens depending on the cases I had that week. I also find myself rewinding many parts when something was said so well I have to hear it again! Much appreciated!

  • Practical and science based needed content!

There’s not enough discussion specifically stranger abbot directed aggression issues with dogs, it’s so much of dog dog issues. Each episode is grounded in experience plus science, and short enough to leave you with brain space to process and apply to your own situations.

Pain with Micaela Young DVM - Part I
Q: How should referrals and communications with veterinarians be handled to maintain professionalism and avoid misinterpretation about medications like clonidine?
Communications should be precise and brief; trainers should avoid naming specific medications in client conversations with clinics unless necessary, and ensure that any medication mentions are contextualized within a broader plan discussed with the veterinarian to prevent miscommunication.
Pain with Micaela Young DVM - Part I
Q: So, when a consultant suspects pain or discomfort and refers back to the veterinarian, what information is most helpful to the vet?
A concise, bullet-point summary at the top of the referral that lists concerns, observed problematic behaviors, client-reported red flags, and objective observations, avoiding overly long histories; this helps vets quickly grasp the key issues and decide on next steps.
Pain with Micaela Young DVM - Part II
Q: What should a pain trial look like and how long should it last?
Traditionally it was short, but now it's often six weeks (some go eight); duration should be tailored to the client's ability to observe the dog and to the suspected pain type and the dog's sensitivity.
Pain with Micaela Young DVM - Part II
Q: How do you handle pain exploration when diagnostic tests come back normal?
Acknowledge that pain can exist even with normal tests, set expectations with clients that pain may still be present, and pursue a pain trial and rehabilitation referrals to localize triggers and measure functional changes.
