  • History, culture, but above all music!!

I first started listening to Afropop as a teenager on South Carolina public radio in about 1994. I still have a cassette I recorded off the radio. Thirty years later I still love Afropop. I have been exposed to so many wonderful musicians and genres of music. I have learned so much about the history of music too and I love it!

The Zulu Factor

The Zulu are part of the Bantu-speaking peoples who migrated to southern Africa, with King Shaka being a key figure who consolidated the Zulu Empire in the early 19th century.
Global Griots in France
Q: What does your song Trust mean?
Today, don't trust people you don't know 100%. You have to listen to both sides before you make a judgment. Otherwise, you have been unjust.
Global Griots in France
Q: Would you talk a little about your unique way of playing the balafon?
I invented my own style of playing. The quickness, you see? I created that. No one really played like that before, with that kind of energy that I give to it.
Global Griots in France
Q: How can you be a Jelly, a Kouyaté, at the same time you play music for Europeans and Americans?
I define life as a river. There is a source, but it continues and does not stop. It takes on the colors of all the places it passes.
