Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

50 Years of Pediatric Rheumatology: A Retrospective
Q: Are there still some children that aren't benefiting from these advances? Are there some limitations in access to care and cost of medications?
Yes, there are still significant gaps in access, with several states lacking a pediatric rheumatologist or having too few, which disproportionately affects timely care and outcomes. The guest emphasizes ongoing advocacy, workforce planning, and supportive programs aimed at expanding services to underserved areas while continuing to push for broader access and affordable therapies.
Support for Private Practice
Q: What advice would you give to a busy independent rheumatologist about engaging with the ACR and using its resources?
Listen to the podcast, explore the revamped ACR website, join the Independent Rheumatology Subcommittee if possible, and stay informed about advocacy opportunities and member benefits so they can participate and benefit from national and state-level efforts.
Support for Private Practice
Q: What are the biggest challenges you face as a private practice rheumatologist today, and how is the ACR helping address them?
Key challenges include access bottlenecks, margin compression, and prior authorizations. The ACR has responded with structural advocacy, resources like guidelines apps, and the CPC/Independent Rheumatology Subcommittee to unify independent practices, plus practical tools for onboarding APPs and engaging with payers.
Support for Private Practice
Q: Nihad, could you intro yourself and share how you came into private practice and your current role?
I trained in New York, considered academic rheumatology, but moved to Arizona for a private practice opportunity that grew into leading the largest independent rheumatology group in the nation while maintaining academic collaborations and research activities.
The Next Era of Gout Therapy
Q: Do you think it's because there's something about the biology that it's inevitable that patients will flare?
Dr. Fitzgerald highlights the unique nature of gout therapy, noting the necessity for better adherence and the misunderstanding of patient perspectives regarding medicated treatments.
