故事是這樣的：有一天晚上，一位年輕的鄉紳來農夫家吃晚飯。農夫的女兒到地窖去拿蘋果酒，突然看見屋樑上插著一把大木槌，嚇得大哭：「萬一以後我生了兒子，他長大來拿蘋果酒的時候，大木槌掉下來砸死他怎麼辦！」父母聽了也跟著一起大哭，三個人哭得傷心欲絕。
年輕人看了笑到快彎腰，他輕輕鬆鬆就把大木槌拿下來，說：「我走遍天下，還沒見過比你們三個更傻的人！如果找到三個比你們更傻的傻瓜，我就回來娶你女兒！」
