Q: Tell me a little bit about Smoke from a Distant Fire. Who wrote it? What was it about? Give me some of the backstory.
The song emerged from a late-night coffee-tabled collaboration where a guitar riff and a lyric about a distant fire were combined; Ed Sanford and I co-wrote the song, with Jerry Wexler later recognizing its potential and helping to shape its success.
