Johnny Townsend - The Voice Behind 'Smoke From A Distant Fire'
Q: Then you fell out with Ed, didn't you? Was that as a result of the change of genre and the record companies kind of making you feel you were yesterday's news?
The split was partly due to profitability and changing industry dynamics; we remained friends and continued to write for others, exploring different musical directions and eventually pursuing separate paths.
Johnny Townsend - The Voice Behind 'Smoke From A Distant Fire'
Q: You came together with Ed in the early 70s, didn't you? Can you tell us a story about how the two of you found each other?
Ed and I met after high school, connected over music at clubs on the Gulf Coast, and eventually moved to California with a producer; our collaboration grew from casual gigs to a publishing deal and then recording opportunities, laying the foundation for Sanford-Townsend Band.
Johnny Townsend - The Voice Behind 'Smoke From A Distant Fire'
Q: Tell me a little bit about Smoke from a Distant Fire. Who wrote it? What was it about? Give me some of the backstory.
The song emerged from a late-night coffee-tabled collaboration where a guitar riff and a lyric about a distant fire were combined; Ed Sanford and I co-wrote the song, with Jerry Wexler later recognizing its potential and helping to shape its success.
Status Quo’s John Coghlan: Founder, Drummer, Rock Survivor
Q: Did that frustrate you?
I think it did. We couldn't wait to go back home to England, where we knew we were big.
