イスラム国家の特徴として、国内でのアルコール販売はできません。また、一夫多妻制度も認められています。観光にも力を入れており、水上都市のボートツアーや熱帯林のエコツーリズムの人気があります。暑い国で経済的に豊かなので、みんながのんびりしていて、生活に余裕がありそうです。
マレーシアは東南アジアでは人口が多い国ではないため、戦略的に差別化を図っています。「ルック・イースト戦略」では、主に日本企業の労働倫理（勤勉さ、時間厳守）や組織文化（チームワーク、長期雇用、改善活動）を導入し、工業化に成功しました。
また、2010年に「アジアの教育ハブになる」戦略を打ち出し、インターナショナルスクールを大幅に増やし、日本を含む世界各国から留学生を呼び込んでいます。私の知人が経営するスクールの教育方針は、少人数クラスで個性を伸ばすという、現代のニーズに合致したものです。
マレーシアは、1963年に英国から独立してから急速に経済発展し、一人当たりGDPで12,000ドルという先進国レベルまで到達しました。英国統治下では、スズ鉱山と農業プランテーション（天然ゴム、油ヤシ）が主産業の発展途上国でした。
