  • Great show

Great for music lovers, especially if you love talking about it with people just as passionate about it as you are. Feels like you’re just hanging out and talking music with a couple friends.

  • Expand your musical horizons

I’m a big Al Melchior fan and always looking for something else to listen to so I am not about to miss an episode. I think the advice to listen to each album 3x is good. I usually listen to the album 2x, then the episode, then the album again

In furtherance of the podcast’s mission I suggest each guest & reviewer provide 5 great, underrated albums. Here are mine:

Lost & Gone Forever- Guster - Alt rock

    Moondance - Van Morrison - singer/songwriter

    The Koln Concert-Keith Jarrett-jazz piano

  • Refreshing

Al is such a humble dude. He’s willing to open himself up to his audience by showing that he doesn’t know everything. Learning about new music, even if it’s new to you, with another person is a rare joy. That’s what is at the heart of this podcast. It’s not just the new experience of the music, it’s the rare treat of experiencing music with another person for the first time. Well done Al!

  • I know it’s early...

I’ve only heard a 3 minute trailer, but I feel justified in proclaiming this as the greatest podcast of all-time.

Very excited to see what Al does with this. I’ve long been a fan of his work as a writer and podcaster and he’s shown to have an amazing taste in music in the years we’ve followed each other.

    Highly recommended!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Robert Deeble Discusses Florist, self-titled
Q: What was your first impression when you listened to Florist for the first time?
The guest describes a transition from initial skepticism about the intro to immediate resonance with Emily Sprague's melodies and the natural soundscape, leading to a deep appreciation for the album's lo-fi warmth and pastoral ambience.
Amelia Fletcher Discusses Girls at Our Best!, Pleasure
Q: So before we dig into the album itself, I'm interested in how you picked it.
Amelia explains there was no short list; this album was chosen decisively because it had a strong personal influence and fit with her desire to discuss something that felt formative yet not entirely familiar to the host.
Matt Smith Discusses Songwriting in Politically Charged Times, Writing about Grief and More
Q: How has your songwriting evolved over time, especially in response to current events?
He describes a constant evolution, moving from personal pain to addressing broader social and political issues through direct, unambiguous lyricism, and using songwriting as a way to process and comment on national mood.
224. Hannah Frances Discusses Fiona Apple, The Idler Wheel...
Q: What drew you to talk about this Fiona Apple album in particular?
The guest explains that the album spoke to her exact experiences of adolescence and early adulthood, offering a raw, unguarded voice that influenced her own development as a songwriter and performer.
223. Ásgeir Discusses Atoms for Peace, Amok
Q: When did you find out you were going to be playing the same festival as Atoms for Peace?
We learned about it after discovering the album, and the idea of sharing a festival with them felt like a huge milestone, especially given the context of their live presence.
