Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

EP. 1809: Writer/Actor Daniel Garcia (SEPARATE ROADS)
Q: What has the festival run been like, and how did you approach the production on a tight budget?
We relied on a tight, collaborative team of people I already knew from background work; we built our cast and crew from those connections, kept production lean, and focused on telling a meaningful story that would resonate with audiences regardless of budget.
EP. 1809: Writer/Actor Daniel Garcia (SEPARATE ROADS)
Q: What was the collaboration like with Shalina, your director, and how did it shape the final film?
The collaboration was essential; Shalina pushed to expand the concept from a short scene into a full short film with a festival trajectory, guiding editing and overall vision while I provided the core material as writer and actor.
EP. 1809: Writer/Actor Daniel Garcia (SEPARATE ROADS)
Q: So you wrote the script as a reflection of your life; what motivated you to tell this story now?
I wrote what I knew to connect with people and to address the harmful effects of conversion therapy, turning a personal journey into a message that could resonate and spur discussion.
EP. 1801: Screenwriter Bob Dawson (BEINGS OF AN INFERIOR ORDER)
Q: You retired recently and you're still writing, that's quite the shift. What pushed you to keep going?
COVID sparked a new hobby that turned into a serious pursuit; the combination of ongoing historical interest, supportive feedback, and the accessibility of festivals kept me moving forward.
EP. 1801: Screenwriter Bob Dawson (BEINGS OF AN INFERIOR ORDER)
Q: So what did you do? You kind of used like artistic liberties, I guess?
I tried to stay as faithful to documented events as possible, while building a narrative around the gaps in the historical record to give the characters a believable arc and emotional depth.
