  • Super informative!

This is an amazing podcast! I’m not a rehabilitator (yet) since I’m still a teen, but I have learned so much from this podcast from loons not living in captivity to crop milk in the columbidae family! Gail Buhl does an awesome job and I have this podcast to thank for an interest in rehab!

To rap up my review, this podcast cast is well made, very informative, and loads of fun! I would highly recommend.

  • Invaluable information - thank you for this resource!

I’m a new “sub-permittee” to wildlife rehabilitation in RI. We are fortunate enough to have a great clinic as a central hub for rehabilitation. I am learning so much as I take shifts there. Staff and experienced volunteers are great at answering questions, but they are so busy! This podcast has been a wonderful gift to give me in-depth information so that in can increase my knowledge without stressing out busy staff. Please, please, keep these episodes coming! And thank you!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S5E15 Lead Toxicity with Julia Ponder Part 2
Q: What triggers the decision to treat a lead-exposed bald eagle, and how has that threshold evolved over time?
Treatment decisions depend on both blood lead levels and the presence of neurological or cardiovascular clinical signs. Historically, birds above 20 micrograms per deciliter were treated; over time, more birds with lower levels are treated due to increased awareness and the ability to achieve better outcomes with chelation.
S5E14 Lead Toxicity with Julia Ponder Part 1
Q: Explain what acute versus chronic lead poisoning means for those who might not know.
Acute lead poisoning is a high-dose exposure over a short period, producing very high blood lead with rapid, severe clinical signs, while chronic exposure involves lower levels over a longer time, leading to subclinical or slowly progressive organ effects and poorer body condition.
S5E13 Preventive Medicine with Scott Diehl
Q: What were the practical steps that made preventive medicine feasible in an annual cycle?
They started with quick wins during off-seasons, such as setting up a hotline script, conducting site visits to identify risk factors for bird collisions, and gradually adding scalable tools like ultraviolet window cling materials to raise awareness and reduce harm.
S5E13 Preventive Medicine with Scott Diehl
Q: How did the Wings program come about and what did it aim to address?
It grew out of collaboration with Bird Conservation Initiative to tackle bird-window collisions, expanding to a multi-faceted program that included bird-safe buildings, household window clings, and public education to reduce wildlife injuries.
S5E13 Preventive Medicine with Scott Diehl
Q: What initially inspired the shift from solely treating animals to focusing on prevention?
Diehl explains that the realization of recurring, avoidable admissions—like misidentified orphaned bunnies and bird collisions—made them rethink priorities, leading to targeted prevention efforts and community engagement rather than continuing to scale admissions.
