  • Fire about Fire

Thought the pod with Dr. Marcus Williams was one of the best yet. This was an excellent introduction to a practical application of meteorology (and different than most guests). It also provided excellent career advice on the value of networking, mentor / mentee relationships the importance of paying it forward. And Dr. Williams is very humble in presenting it. Thank you!

  • Late-Bloomer Weather Geek

I’ve survived a tornado at age 8 and three hurricanes as an adult. But it was only after finding this extraordinary podcast that I fully realized how engrossing and relevant weather and climate studies are. Thank you for your lively expert programming and commitment to public safety. This is a fascinating “must-listen” for me.

Q: How does Wisconet differ from other mesoscale networks, and what makes it effective for Wisconsin?
Wisconet is a statewide Mesonet with about 78 stations built in just a couple of years, designed for high-resolution, distributed data that supports local weather understanding, warnings, and end-user tools.
Measuring Tornadoes from Space
Q: What are the main data sources and tools you use for satellite-based tornado assessment?
They describe using Planet Labs for high-resolution imagery (about three meters per pixel) and Sentinel-2 for SAR data, along with NDVI and debris analysis to infer wind damage and validate with field surveys and drone footage.
Measuring Tornadoes from Space
Q: How did you get into this line of work and become a Weather Geek?
The guest explains a civil engineering background, wind engineering focus, and pivot into meteorology through practical work on wind and tornado impacts on structures, leading to a data-driven approach to measuring tornado strength from space.
