  • Voice hard to understand

The content is probably pretty good but it is spoken in. A way that exhausts me. Too fast, unclear, not loud enough, not trying to be understood.

  • Practical wisdom from a great interpreter!

I’m so glad that the spiritual director at Way of Compassion Dharma Center has started this podcast! John Bruna is a great interpreter of Buddhist wisdom and teachings as he has lived as a Buddhist monk in India, been a school teacher in the US, and worked in many areas of life in between. He has a way of making teachings practical, understandable, and open to all. The Dharma Center he helped create has become a great and supportive community where questions and discussion are always welcome.... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Following in the Buddha's Footsteps 02 - The Mind's Potential
Q: How do we know whether we are knowing these abilities or have purified them?
The host suggests seeking a qualified teacher for guidance and emphasizes ongoing practice, direct experience, and checking progress through disciplined practice rather than relying solely on intellectual understanding.
Following in the Buddha's Footsteps 01- Refuge in Reality
Q: Hi John, thank you. I just had a question about like, is there like a formal practice within Buddhism of taking refuge or taking the vows? Like some religions have like ceremony, things like that?
John explains that there is a formal refuge ceremony in some Tibetan Buddhist traditions, but true refuge comes from how one relates to the teachings and the Three Jewels, and such ceremonies are optional and not what gives you refuge by themselves.
How to Meditate on the Stages of the Path 67 - Wisdom in Practice
Q: Okay, so my question is what about hypnotism? Can it be used to break a habit or change a pattern from a Buddhist perspective?
Hypnotism isn't something I've been trained in, but Buddhist practice emphasizes mind training through meditation and analyzing teachings. We work to deconstruct seeds of negative impulses and replace them with healthier impulses via steady practice, not through hypnosis. If you find something helpful, it's fine to explore, but the core method remains meditation and mindful transformation.
How to Meditate on the Stages of the Path 51 - Benefits of Cherishing Others
Q: Can you speak about the balance between cherishing others and self-care?
Yes, it can be self-centered not to let someone help you and realizing this allows for a compassionate balance where you can express your needs as well.
How to Meditate on the Stages of the Path 50 - Self-Centeredness
Q: How do you distinguish when self-care starts to dip into self-centeredness?
It requires experience and reflection, as often self-care can feel selfish while acting in self-centered ways can seem virtuous. It's important to learn and recognize these nuances over time.
