  • Very Thoughtful Podcast on Trust

This is a very special podcast, exploring ideas centered around trust with dozens of very smart and knowledgeable people. The interviews are very well done by host Severin de Wit. Listen to thought leaders like Francis Fukuyama, university presidents, half of the Dunning-Kruger duo, all talking about social and psychological aspects of trust, both personal and institutional. Severin always comes prepared, and his guests do not disappoint.

  • Very interesting podcast

The 'Trusttalks' are definitely worth listening to. What makes these interviews so unique is that they show that ‘trust' is relevant in so many areas. People lay trust in the food industry, the judiciary system, the functioning of companies, but also in sport coaches who help their pupils through new insights. All of these examples are based on a different dimension of trust.

I highly recommend listening to the whole podcast serie but, for me personally, 'Regaining trust in Journalism' and 'Tru... more

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Scandal, Suspicion, and the Road to Rebuilding Trust
Q: What were the three critical incidents in the company's journey from scandal to rebuilding dialogue?
The first incident was the rapid entrenchment of mutual distrust after the scandal, driven by a profit-first posture. The second was the realization that change was inevitable due to pressure, leading to willingness to change for self-preservation rather than stakeholder interest. The third was a shift in stakeholder perception, aided by a neutral third party, resulting in a breakthrough toward dialogue, albeit with ongoing suspicion.
Scandal, Suspicion, and the Road to Rebuilding Trust
Q: You describe value incongruence and perceived malevolence as two main drivers. Could you explain what these terms mean and how they manifested in your case?
Value incongruence refers to fundamentally different priorities between profit-focused management and sustainability-oriented stakeholders, leading to incompatible approaches to issues. Perceived malevolence is the belief by stakeholders that the company is not credible in its communication, fueling defensiveness and mistrust. Together they created a mutual cycle of distrust that was difficult to break without neutral mediation and careful engagement.
Justice on Trial, Prosecutors, Politics and Credibility
Q: And what could help restore that credibility?
Restoration hinges on institutional protections that shield line prosecutors from political pressures, greater transparency about decision-making within realistic limits, and a culture that prioritizes the law, facts, and public interest over political convenience.
Justice on Trial, Prosecutors, Politics and Credibility
Q: From your perspective, how does politics get in the way of prosecutors during their job?
Politics can influence case selection and the portrayal of facts, leading to perceptions that prosecutions are driven by partisan ends rather than the law, which undermines trust and the legitimacy of outcomes.
Impatience, Vague Requests, and the Strain on Trust
Q: Can you share an example of turning a breakdown into a breakthrough through trust-building during a disagreement?
He recounts a case where two colleagues with different communication styles learned to acknowledge and respect each other's approach, which enabled them to find a solution and strengthen their working relationship.
