Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Where and what is Hamas today?
Q: So if I understand it correctly, it's two things, two main points. It's one that Hamas enjoys considerable pragmatic maneuverability. And the other main point is that there is not one Hamas, there are many Hamas in the sense that there is an informal dividing line or boundary within Hamas between pragmatists and pragmatists and ideologues or moderates and hardliners, doves and hawks, whatever term you think is best.
The episode explains that Hamas operates with internal tensions between pragmatists who are willing to consider electoral participation and limited governance, and hardliners who favor continued violence; both wings share a core belief that Palestine belongs to Palestinians, but differ on strategies and timelines for statehood and peace.
Global governance in transition: EU–Japan perspectives
Q: Why are minilateral formats gaining traction now, and how do they complement or replace traditional multilateralism?
Minilateral formats offer flexibility and speed, addressing transnational challenges while preserving legitimacy through selective participation, and can complement larger institutions by serving as a testing ground for norms and practical cooperation.
Global governance in transition: EU–Japan perspectives
Q: What challenges is Japan facing today and how might partners navigate them?
Japan needs a proactive national strategy for geopolitics, economy, and security to reduce uncertainty for itself and its partners, enabling them to predict its moves and cooperate effectively.
Environmental dimensions of conflict in the Lake Chad region
Q: But why would you say it's important to look at the impact of conflict on the environment?
It's important because conflict and war have broad ecological consequences, affecting ecosystems and resource availability, which in turn influence peacebuilding, resilience, and the ability of communities to recover; understanding these links helps design more effective stabilization strategies.
Environmental dimensions of conflict in the Lake Chad region
Q: What was your aim with this report?
Our aim was to eliminate the environmental dimension of conflict in the Lake Chad region by examining how conflict impacts the environment and how environmental factors shape conflict, using a multidisciplinary lens and building on methodologies from earlier projects.
