  • Heidi Welsh Feedback

A recent episode featured Heidi Welsh, the Executive Director of a research firm. Obviously, Ms Welsh is one of the sharpest and most in-the-know experts in the field. But the interview was almost unlistenable.

Her voice lacks confidence. She’s “ums” constantly. She “up talks” at the end of her sentences, making definitive statements sound like meek questions.

Finally, she delivers information without insight. I appreciated the data. But what do you think it means, Ms Walsh? Why is it importa... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Shadow SEC and Quarterly Reports with Professor James Cox
Q: How does the discussion connect to IPOs and liquidity in the secondary market?
Maintaining quarterly disclosures supports IPO certification and deep, trustworthy secondary markets, enabling liquidity for existing investors and ensuring investors have reliable information to value and trade securities; the ability to catch market windows through shelf registrations hinges on ongoing quarterly reporting.
The Shadow SEC and Quarterly Reports with Professor James Cox
Q: What is the Shadow SEC's fallback if quarterly reporting were eliminated, and how should the quality of economic analysis be evaluated?
The Shadow SEC contemplates a private-ordering approach where companies could be opt-in or opt-out with shareholder oversight, but emphasizes that comparability and machine-readable formats are essential to avoid reducing transparency; any fallback would still require robust, standardized disclosures to maintain market integrity.
The Shadow SEC and Quarterly Reports with Professor James Cox
Q: Can you summarize the historical precedent for quarterly reporting and why it has endured?
Quarterly reporting began in the 1970s to support liquidity, enable market windows, and facilitate shelf registrations; it has endured because it provides timely, comparable information that investors and markets rely on for decision-making and price discovery.
Winning in the Face of Change with Pat Niemann
Q: How should Boards challenge strategic assumptions?
Boards should articulate what must be true for a strategy to succeed, engage in scenario planning, regularly re-evaluate core assumptions, and proactively revisit strategic options rather than treating reviews as annual events.
Winning in the Face of Change with Pat Niemann
Q: Pat, how does this agility imperative translate to the boardroom?
The board should embrace flexibility and forward-thinking, ensuring alignment with management while maintaining a dynamic approach to strategy that emphasizes ongoing communication, risk understanding, and scenario planning.
