Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The voice of the material – with Suvi Sysi
Q: How did you end up balancing printmaking and ceramics in your practice?
Her transition happened gradually: starting in printmaking, moving into working with paper, then ceramics to bring a stronger, more spatial presence to her work. She treats each medium as part of a continuum rather than separate disciplines.
Do what you're drawn to – with Inka Bell
Q: How did you come to printmaking and paper sculpture?
Her path started with fashion and graphic design, moved toward printmaking via residencies and a desire to print, and gradually shifted to sculpture using paper elements cut and layered to create three-dimensional forms.
Living in technological medieval times – Sheung Yiu
Q: Why Helsinki and how has your path led you here?
The move to Finland was driven by openness of programs like Vika at Aalto and a search for a broader, interdisciplinary environment; I valued a program that wasn't tied to a single medium, allowing collaboration and study across disciplines.
Living in technological medieval times – Sheung Yiu
Q: What is your PhD about?
My PhD monograph Hyper Image investigates the intersection of photography and large-scale computation, examining disciplines like remote sensing and computer vision to understand how images function within contemporary photographic theory and practice.
Living in technological medieval times – Sheung Yiu
Q: What do you do as an artist?
I am an image-based artist who started in photography but works with a range of image-making practices, including data-driven and operational images, video essays, and performances; I use research-based methods and like to present images in a way that guides viewers through a narrative rather than leaving interpretation entirely open.
