I love this podcast. I love hearing about situations and experiences that I’ve never had and learning of people I’d never heard of and their perspective on the world and their craft. I’ve cried multiple times during multiple episodes and then turned around and laughed during the same episode. Miss Tanya and her guests are so charismatic and intelligent. It’s a great listen.

  • Full Fledged Fan

I started the night by intending to listen to the Petri Hawkins-Byrd episode only. Here I am at my sixth episode. Tanya has a way of making topics, that can sometimes be very dry, feel refreshing and interesting. What I love most is her way of looking at the them as an average citizen, but that has an incredibly strong legal mind. I’m definitely going to order her book!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Battle Over Social Media Has Its Day In Court
Q: Why is regulation being framed as necessary, and what would effective regulation look like?
Regulation is seen as necessary because self-regulation has failed to protect young users; effective regulation would require age-appropriate defaults, stronger privacy protections, and holding companies accountable for unsafe product design.
The Battle Over Social Media Has Its Day In Court
Q: What are the specific features that are causing harm, and how did the plaintiff connect those harms to the platforms?
Algorithmic recommendations, endless scrolling, and the quantified likes system were repeatedly tied to body dysmorphia and depression in the plaintiff's experience, with evidence showing these features were designed to maximize engagement and time on the platform, thereby amplifying harmful content.
When the Smoke Clears: Holding Power Accountable in an Age of Disaster
Q: How did the private sector, notably Rick Caruso, contrast with the city's approach in terms of readiness and resources?
Caruso's team had pre-positioned private firefighters and resources, illustrating a proactive, on-the-ground readiness that contrasted with the public sector's slower, more fragmented response.
When the Smoke Clears: Holding Power Accountable in an Age of Disaster
Q: What did your sources reveal about how the mayor and other city leaders handled the early warnings and the decision to act during January 7th?
Sources indicated the mayor was not fully engaged or informed in real time, with communication gaps and a lack of clear direction from acting officials, which contributed to delay and disarray in the response.
The Partisan Divide That Started it All: Hamilton, Jefferson and the Battle for America’s Soul
Q: Why is the dinner party in Jefferson's house pivotal to the episode's thesis?
It illustrates the moment when competing visions for liberty, debt, and national power began to solidify into enduring opposing forces, shaping American political development for centuries.
